whats this new .17 HMR like
greetings my northern internet friends. I live in QLD, AUS. curious about the .17 hmr. i own a jw15 in .22(i love it ). but past 50 yds it falls off.trade it for a .17,? i shoot hares for the table.[:-]

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
The 17 will be good out to 150 yards on hares. Its an awsome lil buggar that packs a big punch for being a lil pill. I think it would server your purpose well, give one a try, I seriously doubt you will regret it. My marlin 17 vs shoots like a dream.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
The .17 hmr is a sweet caliber that makes any .22 rimfire look pathetic. You should be able to hit hares out to 200 yards with it and it is a very light gun. You won't regret buying one, but keep the .22 -.22's are fun guns to plink around with. Savage has a .17 hmr out for really cheap, it shoots great but isn't too pretty.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
Or if u wanna go single shot i have an alsome NEF sportser that will hold 10 shots under a dime no problem at 100 yrd .... thats with the new federals !

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
The big question is....17 or 22-250? Depending on which .17 you get the looks can be very pleasing. I had one guy tell me that he's accurate up to 250 yards....I didn't say anything. I'm proud to hold at 180.
There's a great video called "explodin varmits" check it out. turk |
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I think the savage 17s look great. I like the fact that the clip doesnt hang out as far as it does on my marlin vs, of course it holds 2 rounds less i belive.

Don't get caught up in all this 17 cal stuff. Its new and some in experienced guys think its the living end. You can do better with a 22 mag. Get a Volquartsen 22 mag if you want a fine rifle. They can not be beat. 17 cal has a drop after 75 yards not 150 as some dope said.

Secondly, I don't think that you understand external ballistics very well, since any bullet from any gun "has a drop" the instant is clears the crown of the muzzle. Just becase it's going away from the ground doesn't mean that gravity isn't accellerating it toward the ground. And from all the charts I've seen, the .17HMR shoots a heck of a lot flatter and is quite a bit more accurate than a typical .22WMR. And because it uses premium high BC varmint bullets (V-Max and TNT to name two) at high velocity it'll definately mess up anything from a groundhog on down out to 200 yards or more. I think that the .17HMR, of all the newest cartridges introduced in the last 5 years, is one of only a few that really fills a useful nitch and will probably not become obsolete in 10 years like so many other "new and improved" cartridges will. In fact, I can see the .22WMR becoming obsolecent in 10 years because of the .17HMR. But hey, if you like your .22WMR so much, then shoot it, but don't bash others just because they choose to use a different, and in many ways superior cartridge. From what I've seen of it, I think it's a nifty little short range light varminter. I resist the urge to buy one ever time I walk into Ganger Mtn. For $200 bucks it's hard to resist for a Savage .17HMR it's been tough to keep one from finding it's way into my safe! Mike |
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
i shot a .17HMR for the first time the other day and now i want one BAD! talk about a flat shoting, and deadly accurate gun! it was the savage, which i thought was descent looking as well. shoots flatter than any .22, mag or LR and should be good for up to 200 yds. great gun that you will not regreat getting... if you have a 22 mag then they actually sell a kit with a barrel and you can use the same gun you already have, but you said you had an LR, so i am not sure about that... anyways, good luck!

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I was in the market for a new .22 but i was thinkin of maybe upgrading a bit, and after reading this post for the last week i decided on the .17hmr. I picked one up this last weekend at the gun show here in town. I got a pretty good deal on it and i put a 4-12 scope on her. It is also a savage, 5 shot clip, black synthetic stock, heavy barrel. The problem is i haven't shot the gun yet and its killen me. I am stuck in the city here but i will be going back to the farm this weekend so that will give me some shooting time. As for what this cal is capabile of i'm not sure,,ALMOST everyone had really good things to say about it but after this weekend when i try it out i will be back in to report my full opinion on the gun. Movie critics don't give a report without seeing the movie......i am the same way......

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
All this talk about the 17 HMR has given me the itch to get one. I've heard one positive review after another about that gun. Hiawatha, I'll be really interested to hear how you like yours.
Oh, and Brusser, you're about two breaths away from getting the old "Green Ignore Button" from me. Lighten up, pal. |
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I recently picked up a CZ-452 American in the .17 HMR cliber. This is one of the hottest little rounds out on the market today!! Much flatter shooting than the .22 WMR. Check the chart to see for yourself!!;)

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I got out for a bit this weekend and let the little dog bark. I was only shooting at 30 yards but it was extremly accurate by the time i got her all sighted in. On one occasion i put it through the same hole 3 out of 4 times. Never could i do that with my .22 lol.... I probably won't be doing much long range shooting with this gun because i bought it basically for beavers. Most of my shots are around 30-40yards but its nice to know if there is a beaver swimmin way down river i can still reach out and touch him.
|
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
Hia, I knew you would like it. The 17 is a blast huh? Mines shoots better than I ever will.
|
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
sure is tree. my finger is just itchen for the ice to come off the river here so i can let that black beauty sing. Mine is suprisingly heavy for the size of it, i guess because it has such a heavy barrel on it. They had a lighter model at the gun show but i bought the hevier one because i thought it would shoot better and boy no regrets.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
Hiawatha- Up in CA do they allow you to shoot rifles into the water? Here in the states you're not permitted to do that because if the bullet ricochets, it's hard telling where it may end up.
Just curious... |
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
well your not exactly shooting into the water a beaver swims with all of its brain exposed, and the brain is the only shot u take. Shooting on water, along water or whatever has never been outlawed for us while beaver hunting. Now i recall from my hunters safety class they mentioned something about not shooting into water but i am not sure if there is any real official law or fine against it. I am quite positive it is accepted because one of the game wardens here traps and shoots them each year for bear bait and the hides. Shooting them while they are swimming is a pretty common practice here that most farmers/landowners have to go through each year. Its either shoot them or bother the government for wildlife damage, letting us thin them out is a much easier approach.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I have a 17 and its so smooth. It shoots fast, dead accurate, and its pretty quiet. I use it for all my predator hunting now. 150 up to 200 is perfect

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
Has anyone had experience with the Braztech single shot chambered in .17 HMR? It's imported by Rossi and made in Brazil. I just bought one at Wal Mart for $123.95. The price was right cause I just had to see what all the talk was about with the new caliber and figured I wouldn't be out too much money if I didn't like it. I have only fired it 7 times and the factory open sight shoots about 6 in. high at 25 yrds. and it can't be adjusted for anything but windage. I am going to mount a 3x9 Tasco on it as soon as the scope base comes in from Rossi. ( it's backordered) No American company has a base for it yet. Anyway, if someone else has one of these rifles and can shed some light on it please give me a shout.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
Ive got the NEF 17 caliber and its the single shot and Ive got a Simmons 3x9x40 on it and thats the sweetest gun Ive ever picked up and it groups great at 100 yards I can group them the size of a quarter. Thats much better than I normally shoot any gun. Im not that good of a shot but since I bought this rifle it has boosted my confidence tremendously. I love the gun. I sent mine to guy to have some work done on the trigger ,it was a little stiff so I got this guy to fix it for me now its really awesome. I would recommend this gun to anyone. Seems like everyone is buying them around here.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
All this talk on the 17HMR has really gotten to me. I want one bad, and what better timing, my birthday is coming up. Anywho. Are squirlles and Rabbits too small for it, and are yotes to big? Just some questions.
|
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
It would be fine on squirrels and rabbits. I bought mine to shoot beavers with. I don't think i would take too many cracks a coyotes with it cause i feel its a little underpowered for that. It would have to be a pretty close range shot for me to consider it. just my opinion though...

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I was looking into getting a 17. How much have you guys been paying for yours? I have heard nothing but good about them!
|
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I love my 17. I have the varmit model NEF (H&R), it is a sweet shooting little gun.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
Well my 17hmr got its first taste of blood last night. I was back home beaver hunting along the river bank. I was sittin down by the a beaver house and spooted bubbles coming out from the house so I waited for the beaver to surface and capped him behind the ear. OH baby did that gun do the job well. The beaver didn't so much as flinch one bit. This is virtually inpossible with a 22. Usually if you hit them good they will thrash around for awhille and possibly go under again. This guy just hunched over in the water and was done like dinner. It put a pretty good wound on him, when i shot i instantly witnessed a spray of blood shooting into the air. This was the first time i have tried it out on a beaver and although the shot was no more than 10 yards i was really impressed with the smack it puts on them. I have my beaver hunting partner jealous now of the 17hmr. Only 29 more to shoot in order to pay for the gun.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
Hiawatha.. Let me know how the 17 works on beaver. I use a 22 mag and have also used 22LR and 22 Hornet. I find the Hornet is a little bit too much, but the 17 might be the ticket.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
i have the rem 597 and shoot the hornady bt and i shot one beaver at about 100 yds and another at about 150 yds and i can tell you they were dead when they were hit[both in the head].i had heard so much negative talk about the rem 597., i almost bought the marlin bolt.i have shot about 4 boxes of hornady and cci hp without a problem.i love the hmr .17 and the 597.BTW,it is bad on armadillos too!
|
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
The .17 would be a good trade they shoot with high velocities for the size they are and the shells are pretty cheap and i think it would do real well on hares. dont listen to brusser i dont think he knows how to read a chart either

ORIGINAL: smoothsteve All this talk on the 17HMR has really gotten to me. I want one bad, and what better timing, my birthday is coming up. Anywho. Are squirlles and Rabbits too small for it, and are yotes to big? Just some questions. If you check out Midway (www.midwayusa.com) there are a lot more bullets available for the .17 HMR than you usually see in stores. If you are going for rabbits and squirrels, forget about the ballistic tip styles. They are way too destructive. CCI now has a 20 grain Gamepoint. While less destructive, it is still a hollowpoint, and moving very fast. So far, my favorite round for small game is CCI's full metal jacket. That thing is moving so fast, and has so much energy for small game that expansion isn't really necessary. With this bullet, it is deadly on rabbits and squirrels. I will try and take a couple pics this coming weekend for you. |
RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
i bought a matching pair of savages in the model 93 with stainless barrels on composite stocks. one was a .22 mag for myself and a .17 hmr. for my son. the .17 will out shoot the .22 mag with ease if there is no wind but does not do very well in any kind of wind if you are shooting much over a 100 yards. the kid can keep his shooting about the size of a dime at 100 yards which i think is really good. they are a very fast round but they also lose speed very fast. over all they are a very fun gun to shoot. they just do not have much power behind them. someone early was comparing it to a 22-250 well they would never begin to compete in that class not even close. a 3 foot drop at 300 hundred yards is not a good varmint rifle. i know that one of my boys friends was going to buy one to hunt coyotes with until he tried one of my .223's. he forgot about the .17 in a big hurry.:) i forgot about the price question. they are $200.00 a piece for the .17 or .22 mag.

RE: whats this new .17 HMR like
I have a Savage in composite with the stainless heavy barrel on it, and I wouldn't trade that gun for theworld, I love it. It has a redhead cheapo 3x9x40 scope on it, but it still takes birds off of limbs and fenceposts at 100 yards, with a body shot to the upper body. Any further distance accuracy isn't important to me, the area where I hunt is heavily wooded and I would never get a shot that far off anyway.
I agree with what was said earlier about being too destructive on rabbits and smaller, it leaves an exit wound about 3" across or just explodes the body part. I have never tried any other FMJ or game point though, I'll have to give that a world. As for game it takes, I have killed rabbits, squirrels, crows, doves, armadillos. I have killed 1 hog with it, but it was about a 25 yard shot, and I put it right through the hogs ear and it dropped where it stood, by no means would I recommend this gun for game that big, I just had the oppurtunity for the shot and took it. It dressed out at 95 pounds. As for coyotes, I have a story for that too, as it is my favorite, albeit the hardest, thing I hunt. In 3 years, I have only been able to call in 2, so they are tricky around here. I shot the same coyote oncein the body, looked like through the lungs or in that area at least from about 80 yards, heturned and started to kind of jog in my direction, I don't think he knew where the shot came from, and I shot him AGAIN from straight on in the chest, and he still kept going.Needless to say, I am sure I hit him, but for coyotes, I think I am going to upgrade to that bushmaster varmint AR-15 in the future in .223. And for the record, I got the second coyote last year, but it was with a 12 gauge and buckshot, about a 20 yard shot. |
