Hey, I used to use the 20 gauge when i first started out but now i use a .22 LR or recently i have found the excitement and challenge of hunting them with a bow...if you try that be sure to bring back-up because i have had them run up trees even with a well placed shot.

I like to use a .22mag and concentrate on head shots. If I want a bunch to eat I use a .22LR.

usually a 12ga, but shot a pesky one today with a benjamin pump- had to chase him and step on his head before he got back up the tree.

For ground squirrels I use my Marlin Model 60 .22LR. As a matter of fact, I went out yesterday. I was able to get two in the few minutes that I was out. Mainly wanted to go see what the roads were like and tried to find a few coyotes, but didn't really get too serious about hunting squirrels. Didn't see any coyotes either.

A heavily modified 10/22...carbon fiber bbl, volquartsen trigger group, target stock, 4 x 12 AO Leupold, Burris Zee rings, Powre Custom base mounted to both the reciever and the bbl and a volquartsen bullet stabilization comp. Of course the squirrels don't care, but it makes it more fun for me.:D

i hunt with a 10 gauge when the leaves are on and when they are off i use a 375 h&h mag.

I use a Ruger 10-22 with 3-9 scope or a Marlin 60 with 3-9 scope out to 60 yards . Shooting squirrels with a shotgun is for sissies . ;)

My first rifle was a ruger 10/22. I don't know how many squirrels have fallen to it. It is still the most accurate .22 I have. I bought an old marlin 39mountie last winter and had a blast rabbit hunting and I am eager to hunt squirrels this fall. Season here in MO. just opened up but I am terrified of snakes so the tree rats can wait. My wife shoots a .22 browning lever action. She has a little trouble with the grays.

I use a Daisy 22SG with a 4x32 scope. I got some cool hollowpoints form predatorpellets.com They are a little heavy for the daisy at 17gr but if I had a Beeman...
I can't wait to get my marlin 982vs 22WMR. They will never know...

I'm with you young gun, but I really like my longbow, Colt .22 Revolver, or my Old Savage .20...but its nice to limit out with the 11-87 now and then...

Early season my 12 or 20 gauge. Later in the season my 10/22. I am plannin on getting a single shot NEF 16 gauge soon and that will be my new squirrel shotgun. I will let my girlfriend use my .410 or 20 gauge. I have also shot them with a bow, that is very fun and interesting.

I use a .22LR Marlin 880. Not the most accurate but can get off a head shot at 50 yards.
I used to use a Mossberg 500 12 guage to hunt. Didn't like it that much. I'm thinking of
buying a .17 HMR for this comming season.

This year I will be using my new .17 HMR with a 4.5x16x40 Simmons ATV on it. Sniping squirrels are fun and long shots are the norm around here. It is also fun for long range crow shots in the farm fields that surround where I hunt.

I was using my 12ga. one day. Accidentally grabbed a slug in my rush to leave the house. Put that sucker in as the second round. Got one tree rat with the first shot. Walked to a wallnut tree and sat down to wait them out. Well, here come one and now, unknowingly, packing a slug I squeezed off on the thing and he was in a limb looking my way so I blew his head out his a$$ and back about 20ft.
Now I make 100% sure I dont have any slugs on me when I head out. Dont usually use my 12ga. anyway.
You can see in my first post I usually either take my 410 or my bow or sometimes Ill take the .22.

the most effective weapon for squirrel is the 45-70 with a 405 gr. bullet but make sure its a hollow point for maximum penetration (squirrel's hides can get thick during the fall so i suggest the hollow point) aim for back hind legs to eliminate all meat that you would eat

I hunt with a Marlin Model 60 with CCI hollow mini-mag. I got my first limit yesterday (happened to be opening day) 5 squirrels in 12 shots. Not too bad, I could't find one of the squirrels, must have crawled away after falling.

i would like to know how everyone hunts squirrels here. i mostly still hunt and shoot them with a 22lr. once inawhile i just go out and sit by a nice big patch of woods and wait them out
