NEW PREDATOR PHOTO CONTEST = PRIZES

Gang,

Let's have some fun during January and with the predators we pursue....

I suggest a photo contest showing coyotes, fox, bobcats, etc that we have shot this winter. Let's post pics here until the end of January and then we can vote on the best photo. Possible criteria could be appearance of animal ( and hunter, ha ), background, clearity, etc. At this point, I have 2 prizes in mind, a hat from the Bark at the Moon Coyote Club and a custom predator mouth call from Black Creek Game Calls, Canastota, NY

If this sounds good to anyone, feel free to start posting pics ASAP :)

Well, Heck I'll start then. This picture shows me and a coyote that I called in earlier the same morning that I "tuned" up my shooting on priairie dogs. Don't remember how many Pdogs I ended up with, but I got tired of picking them up just for a photo opp. The coyote was a young(this years) pup. But it made for a fun day going out and getting some early season calling in and then popping some Pdogs. I called the coyote in to about 50 yards before piling him up. I shoot a 22-250 with 50 gr.psp!

I think a photo display is a splendid idea. We just got a really nice digital camera for Christmas.
Howler, you got us off to a great start.

Nice one. But that night calling isn't for me. I'd much rather be in bed when it's dark, and calling critters in the day time. The coyotes aren't afraid of the day light around here, so I get good action yet during day time.:D The only place you'll find a red in these parts is in the city, and that's the only place you won't find a coyote, for the most part.

Here's my entry. Howler and I (Cat Man Doo) met on this forum a year ago. Since we are both Colorado hunters, I invited him down to hunt our neck of the woods. Tim showed me alot about calling coyotes with a mouth call that year and has been one of the most memorable years for me calling predators, mainly coyotes.
This photo was taken on 1/18/03 near Trinidad, Colorado and as you can see, was almost like a summer day. We even found a old dead steer skull, took the horns off and made howlers from them. Thanks Tim for a memorable hunt!

Alright Catmandoo, bring your carcass up here, along with your fancy camera, and let's do it again, in my neck of the woods.;) That was a fun day. I can still remember that one stand like it was hours ago. Hope you've got that rifle sighted in so I don't have to shoot'em all when you come up here:D I'm thinking the 2nd or 3rd weekend of Jan. How's that sound? Man I got to get a new camera:D

Gang,

Here is our New Year's Day fox, taken at 9:30 PM. I called it in with a Kinight & Hale rodent squeeker and my cousin took a nice shot withe the Rem 700 in .223. No scenery here, but the hunt was great... Called in a coyote, but he winded us and took off like a banshee

Some good predators on here especially the red foxes. Don't have many coyotes in Britain or Bobcats. Has anyone ever seen the "Warrener" Videos?

Jagarn, welcome!! I'm glad to see all you young hunters on here.

In all my years in the woods, I can honestly say I've never seen a red or silver fox in the wild. Lots of bobcats, cougars and yotes though.
I may not even get a photo on here this year. I have to have some shrapnel removed from my leg soon. That'll stop my goose and yote hunting. Oh well, I sure am enjoying looking at all the other photos.
Thanks guys for the great photos.

I would also like to have a all-around wildlife photo contest, maybe they could be dead or alive. I take a lot of photos while scouting deer in the summer so I think it would be cool to just have an overall contest--like trapping, small game, big game, upland birds, waterfowl, etc. Otherwise, since I don't shoot a lot of predators, only trap them, such as coons, could I enter these instead?

I'd post it. Live, dead, or mount. It's up to us to vote for the pic we think is the best.

Hey noway,

Nice pictures, thanks for putting them on. Back in 1984 I lived between Salmon and Challis, Idaho. (Hat Creek Ranch) I did some coyote hunting off of highway 93 in the Persimeroy (Spelled wrong:() River valley. Those pictures you are showing are sure bringing back some old memories. We certainly don't have the sage brush here in Maine.

Thanks again, MH

Thanks for the comments on the photos, appreciate it.
I wish I had a digital camera. Some of the other photos posted are much clearer.

I usually use a combination of howling and rabbit distress.
January is the best month for howling in those really big dominant males, that is when I do most of my calling.

Agree the sagebrush grows on you. Nothing like spending a day out in the desert canyon country where you can see for miles and then calling in a couple nice coyotes as a bonus.
