Default Pre Christmas Fox Odyssey

Gang,

This tale needs to be told.

I wanted to take advantage of the nice weather, so I headed out for a long night of predator calling. I needed to do a little xmas shopping on the way and saw this fox gnawing on a dead carcass. I pulled over and took some video and pictures. It was only 10 feet away and didn't care if I was there of not. I even think it enjoyed listening to The Who I was cranking when I lowered the window.

On to the hunt... I started at 3:30 PM and hunted for 5.5 straight hours and never saw a critter.

At 9:00 PM gray fox approached to Baybee Cottontail. I stayed it's distance so I shot it at 150 yards. As I approached to inspect it, I noticed it was gut shot. I went to grab its tail because the hind legs were bloody.... AND THE FOX CAME ALIVE!!!

It shrieked ( and I think I did, too) and scampered into a swampy woods. I followed the blood trail and took a second shot to finish it off. That was a first for me!

A couple of stands later, I noticed this red fox as I approached my set up location. Two lip squeaks brought it running and I hammered it. Two Down!

At 1:15 AM, I called in this nest gray. It did not commit, but rather circled the call at 200 yards despite the wind being "correct." I took the long shot and was pleasantly surprised when I heard the "whump" sound.

Fast forward to 2:30 AM. This red appears directly downwind and won't commit. I take the long shot and do not hear any indication of a hit. I do, however, see eyes way out there and then they went dim. I walked over to investigate. I walked, and then I walked some more. Then, I see the eyes again. I shoot offhand and down it goes. Upon inspection, the first hit had it in the front leg which explains why the fox did not vacate the scene. The orginal shot distance? Ready... 300 yards!

Time of picture: 3:30 AM

I went to bed at 4:00 AM, got up at 6:30 AM for the sunrise shift and saw nothing.
