I saw the matchup this morning. The Hornet won again!

I'm not sure we can call that definitive results Unc, better repeat the experiment so we can get indisputable conclusive findings!!!

22 Hornet has always been a round I've wanted. Don't know why. Sometimes you just want something. I always wanted a 450/400 3 1/4 Nitro Express so I got my hands on a William Evans double rifle chambered for it. I always wanted a 9.3x62 so I got a CZ Model 550 American chambered for it. Maybe I should get a Hornet as a retirement present to myself.

Sounds like a reasonable and rational plan to me!

I find the old Hornet to be a very useful old cartridge and a fine crow killer. Although it does not possess internet accuracy, my little Ruger will consistently shoot 5 shot groups somewhere around an inch or very slightly larger at 100 yards with 45 grain pills. It took a few tries to find the handload that it likes and the brass is very thin but it is worth the effort.

I don't use it to shoot varmints more than 100 to 150 yards, but it is neighbor friendly as it has a bit less noise than a 16" battleship gun (which I would gladly use on crows if I had one). It fits in well between the .22 LR and the .223.

It's a very neat little cartridge good for critters up through yotes. I inherited an old break action Savage Model 219 when my Dad died in 2011 and I dont think he ever used it after he got it many moons ago from a distant relative. I put an old Tasco 3x9x32 on it that I had laying around and it shot real nice. I only had it out once last year over at our Fairgrounds where I do a free security check of the grounds every night in exchange for letting me run my pointer over there. A couple years ago the place was getting overrun with woodchucks and the dog killed at least a dozen young ones and really thinned them out. Last Spring when they started coming out of their dens I got permission from the manager and local police to take the Hornet with me. The first night I shot one at about 50 yards free hand while we were walking along. Later that night I was making the rounds out along the river border in my PU and saw one at the bottom of a big hill where it was safe to shoot. I got out and laid the gun over the corner of the tailgate and when he stood up I put it right on his neck and he dropped like a rock. It was about 100-125 yards and when I went over to him the bullet had hit him right in the chest. I figured I'd have some fun the rest of the year with it over there and only saw two others that were not in a safe area to shoot, but I'll be out with it as soon as they come out this year and try for some more. It looks just like the one in this picture.

22 Hornet is a great cartridge. Mine super accurate. WW 296 is the go to powder for the little fellow, and it makes a great coon stopper too.

My best loads feature Hornady 45 grain bullets (#2230), Lil' Gun powder, and small pistol primers. This is one of the only rifle cartridges to which I apply a light crimp.
