Hello, I'm fresh to the site and trapping. I wanted to know some gear to start with, I don't have anything so maybe a link to a book I could read about trapping. If you would me so inclined to do so you could leave a list of things I'll need. Some thing i have running around in my yard a squirrel, chipmunks, raccoon, groundhog and some hair. There is one big rabbit my dog keeps running off after and I'm tired of chasing after him. any help would be appreciated.

Welcome. Here in NY trapping rabbits is illegal! You'll need to check over all of PA's laws.

Why do you want to trap them, and not shoot them?
Most people trap furbearers to sell the pelts,
If that's the case should check out local trapping club and their auctions.
If your looking to trap to relocate them, check regs as can't just release animals in any woods you come across, probably need special permit for such

If you are just looking to get rid of them and not kill them you can buy simple box traps in different sizes. Just add some shelled corn and that should catch most animals in your yard. Take them out to a location and release them.

Yeah I've grown tired of hair running around my yard too!
(Unless in pie form with a kiddie pool full of BBQ sauce nearby)!
The groundhogs sometimes can be tamed with a paperbag.
Squirrel is a little wiry, but I've eaten them in the past.
I try to steer clear of coons(too greezy).
Chipmunks?.....Really?

Like I said, be sure to check trapping regulations, because some species may not be trapped, hunted, or harrassed.
I'd hate to see your 1st year of trapping cut short just for trapping a little protected animal!
K9 and bobcat trapping is fun, but it can be difficult. I suggest starting out on mink, muskrat, weasel,Etc.

I can't shoot them because i am somewhat close to some neighbor.

Well i don't plan on eating them i plan on donating the frozen meat to be sent off to places where they cant get food easily. I mentioned Chipmunks because i wanted to know if there was a way to keep them from setting off the traps. guess i forgot to mention that, it was late.

i dont think many places will take small game meat from individuals
not the same as food donation programs they have for big game

I would like to help you out, but before I can, I just need to know if you've taken a trapping course to get your trapping license. It seems that had you taken your course, you would've learned all of this. Do you only plan on ridding your yard of animals or are you trapping for furs?
