Friend of mine just got back from Texas and he emailed me a picture of the harvests, there was a Gray fox hit with a .204 it about cut it in half. way too much gun. Same with a .22-.250 I have a .22-.250 for predators but it only gets the nod when I'm targeting Coyotes, I'd sit down and take a long look into a .17 Fireball before you make any decisions, especially for foxes and coyotes.

Ryan.
I was looking at the Savage Lightweight Varmint Series Rifles in 17 Hornady chambering with a 20 gr. bullet, 3,650 fps. Do you think that this setup would be sufficient for a fox and coyote? Would this gun only shoot this bullet or would it also shoot the Remington .17 Fireball?

JR,

Do you mean the .17 (HMR) Hornady Magnum Rimfire ?

Please be specific so we can be of more assistance.

Walk into a walmart or your local sporting goods store and look at the ammo on the shelves.

I think you'll find this eye opening.

It is the .17 Hornet center fire round and the gun is a Savage Model 25 Lightweight Varminter with laminate stock.

That's a good idea. I thinking of doing just that. Thank you.

Since you're not planning to reload, then personally, the only round I'd recommend would be the .223rem. The .204ruger is FAIRLY widely available, but nothing like the .223rem.

Like Sheridan said, if you're planning on using Walmart for all of your ammo needs, then you'll be lucky if they have more than one or two loads in .22-250 or .204ruger, and they may not have these at all. They WILL NOT have .17 Hornet or .17 Fireball. They likely will not have .22 hornet (I have seen it once at walmart). I've never seen 220swift at walmart either.

But every Walmart I've been to has carried 4-5, maybe more loads of .223rem.

None of my local shops carry more than one load of .22 Hornet.

So while I don't agree to limiting myself to "what's on the shelf locally", some people do work this way. Personally, I'd rather order through Midway or roll my own, but it IS nice if you're in a bind and need a box in a hurry that they'd have a load for you on the shelf locally.
