I always use small "trays" for my baits, whether it's peanut butter, sardines, Fancy Feast Catfood, etc etc. I usually "recycle" something to make my "trays" though, like lids, or the bottoms of plastic jars. An empty peanut butter jar makes 2 "trays", the lid, plus I cut the bottom of the jar out so I have the bottom plus about 1/2" of the sidewall. Gatorade bottle lids are good too, since they're just big enough to hold a glob of peanut butter or wet catfood. One of my uncles smears peanut butter on drink lids from mcdonalds, sonic wherever, for his trays.
Having the bait in the tray just makes baiting easier. You can spread the bait into the tray, set it in the trap and tilt the trap to slide it to the back, rather than reaching all the way into the back of your trap to smear bait around (adding your sent to the trap). Plus, it's easier and cleaner to remove the bait when needed, like when you switch baits, or just need to get rid of the old dried/rotten stuff.
