That savage is the way to go I have an old one thatll print 1 inch groups at 50 yards its old and now they have the accutrigger on them, definitely get good glass for it, imo squirrel hunting demands more from a scope than average deer hunting. 3x9x40 is what i use.

I have 10/22's as well but it's nice to be able to cycle subsonic rounds. I had the savage 93 in 22wmr and it was awesome! I probably should have kept it but I decided 22wmr was too much trouble to keep in stock.

I have a Ruger 10-22 stainless and a Marlin Model 60 stainless, of the two I prefer the Marlin for small game. The 15 shot tube mag is a nice advantage over the 10 shot, and frankly I've never liked those rotary mags that Ruger uses. The Marlin will pop Daisy Shatterblast discs repeatedly with ease from 60 yards out, is very light, and jamming has never been an issue with it. Mine was $90 on clearance at Wal-Mart, it's normal price was $140.

Scamper,
If this is your first gun I'm gonna have to recommend a good single shot such as the savage Mark I. There is a lot that can be learned for shooting a single shot rifle for a couple seasons. Now, that being said, I personally own a marlin 60 and ruger 10/22 and love them. I know that they are two of the most repeated recommendations when looking for a good 22 but there is a reason for that. They've probably killed more squirrels and rabbits than any other two models. For hunting situations with a 22 at shorter distances a semiauto will offer that quick second shot. So I honestly recommend them as well. Just a lot of gun for not a lot of money.
If you go for a bolt action, I urge you to give the 22 mag or 17 hmr a look. They're slightly more expensive but are far superior at longer ranges that often faced at the end of the year when cover is sparse and squirrels are running on the ground.
Hope it helps bud
