For Youth Squirrel. We walked around back the road in the woods for a couple hours stopping for a time and then moving on. I'm thinking we weren't out there early enough because we didn't see one darn squirrel!
I'll be taking him out again after school when he doesn't have wrestling practice and then next week, I can hunt! We had fun though!

At least you had fun. That's what should be taught anyway. Killin' is only a small aspect of a successful hunt in my opinion. Bringing in all the experience during the hunt and enjoying it, is the thing I like about it. Glad you and your son had a good time. One tip I have is to go to an area and sit there for about 5-10 minutes and the wildlife will go back to normal. Usually when I come into a spot, the birds, chipmunks and squirrels quit moving as much and then move about after things get quiet.
Have fun out there.

I was just coming to ask for some advice since this is my first year out too. Thanks for offering that bit up iSnipe.
I went out today with my son and nephew and nothing. We saw 3 chipmunks. We even stayed still for awhile and still not a squirrel in sight. We drove around to 4 different places after spending a few hours at each spot in the woods.
I'm lying!!! We saw 1 squirrel today at the 3rd spot we went to and he was too quick for us beginners!
And you know iSnipe, you are so right! It's not all about the killing. It's about spending time with my son and whoever else will be joining us. The boys were a bit frustrated and I tried to tell them that it's about spending time together and getting back to nature. They sure did have fun though. We walked so much today. It was nice to be close to them and the outdoors.
This time Last year, I'd of scoffed at the thought of being out doors in 33* temps. Today, I welcomed it and never once did I shiver or say, I wanna go home. I wish the day never ended to be honest.
