I am into going on survival trips into montana. I am also still new to it and am having a hard time using some sort of technology to catch my meals. I was wondering if anyone new anything to catch small game for survival or books to look into. Such as different sorts of traps, types of material to use that will hold them for me to get them. I am want to keep it so that I can use no technology if any i usually carry a knife and a gerber, thats it. Haven't gotten to that stage just due to the catching of my own food. Thanks

Well I really don't want to use any modern weapons, i am trying to keep it as medieval as possible. Tried making a bow once and it took me a lot of hours of creating with no kills. I was hoping i could set up mulitple traps and check them throughout the days.

Go to the local library. There are usually a few books. A google search will give you some ideas for dead falls, etc... Be aware that most primitive traps are illegal to use.
Snares are the ideal for light weight, effective traps that are easy to set. If you are determined to go totally primitive then you are limiting yourself. You have to be proficient at making cordage from plant fibers at hand to make good snares. If you haven't done this much before, I'd encourage you to work your way into the medieval thing through several experiences. Utilize some technology to start. Many will find that even having a .22 and some cable snares could challenge them for survival. If you have snares you can probably live off of tree squirrels if they are plentiful and you know what you are doing...

Here's a site that might have what ya looking for. http://www.sd-exports.org/m_and_m_fu...tructional.htm
Deadfalls and snares is listed as well as many others, but Modern Snaring Explained would be one of the best IMO. My guess is the Paleo-Indians would have used steel cable, if they could have

The SAS Survival Handbook written by John Wiseman has a lot of good information for us wildernes survival enthusiasts. The have all sorts of snars, dead falls, and other stuff in there. Also I think the guy who does the show survival man may have a book out. I don't know if its any good though.
