In Georgia in the rulebook for the DNR it says, "Any .22 cal or smaller rimfire, air rifle, or muzzleloading...shotguns any having shot shell 3.5 inches or smaller in length with No. 2 or smaller shot." That leaves 6 out I guess. I found it after I posted.

#6 shot is smaller than #2. #7 1/2 is even smaller and #8 is again even smaller.

#6's are ideal for squirrels and rabbits.

I would say that anything any larger than #6 shot is over kill, but I wouldnt go any smaller than 7 1/2 shot.

Like everyone else, 5 or 6 shot for squirrel and 6 or 7 1/2 shot for rabbits....

You should find squirrels can take alot more punishment than rabbits...

Oh yea, rabbit has skin like paper. As a kid we use to kill rabbit with bird shot in the .22s. 7.5 or 8 shot is fine for rabbit. A .22 short is even better.

Shot size is backwards. 2's are bigger than 4's or 6's. I shoot 6 all the time. Rabbits, you can go to a 7.5 never tried 8... but Im sure it works as well....those squirrels are pretty tough tho.
