Default Question about Preserving Small Game

I'm not a very experienced hunter, so I was hopingI could get some advice from someone who is. If I'mon a hunting/camping/hiking trip and have no access to a refrigerator or cooler (in other words, roughing it to the extreme), what is the best way to keep small game from going bad? Not indefinitely, but just for a day or so. I'm primarily wondering whether it would be a better idea to field-dress the animal right away and wrap and salt the meat, or whether I should keep it intact until I'm ready to use or refrigerate the meat. Please let me know. Thank you very much!
