yall lied to me
looks like you all lied to me. yall said you cant kill a coyote with a regular 22. turns out my uncle juust killed a coyote with a 22. at 35 yards he shot it right behind the shoulder, and it never went anywhere.

RE: yall lied to me
I've never seen anybody say that it can't EVER happen, just that it's not an ideal thing to try.
|
RE: yall lied to me
I just looked back at the post when you asked if a 22 would kill a coyote.I did'nt really see anybody say that it would'nt kill a coyote, most were justsaying theirs more risk using a 22 on a coyote and explainingthe importance of shot placement with one.You might look back at your post,I don't think anybody is liying to you.

RE: yall lied to me
I just saw a real cool clip of Tim Wells on Relentless Pursuit busting a 'yote with some tracer ammo. Don't know what kind, but I figure it was .22mag Awesome effect.

ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner you can't base anything on one instance, shoot 100 and see how many you recover. RR |

RE: yall lied to me
Lots of old timers, farmers, and ranchers used to shoot coyotes with a 22. They didn't want to waste any hard earned money on more expensive ammo, and they didn't care if they ran off to die, in fact they would rather they ran off so they didn't have to deal with the carcass. Not the most ethical, but during a different time it seemed to serve the purpose of predator control.

RE: yall lied to me
I'm pretty confident that 100 out of 100 coyotes hit well at 35 yards with a .22 will be dead coyotes. Apoorly hit coyote is gonna give you a good chase whether it is a .22 long rifle or 22-250. I'd still rather have the 22-250 overall, though.[8D]

"looks like you lied to me"?
There should be an age limit on using this forum |
RE: yall lied to me
I said "hit well" not just hit. Go pace off 35 yards. It is not far at all and a well placed .22 long rifle at that range will consistently kill (and recovered) most animals on this continent. But, like i said, i would still like to have something somewhat bigger....

RE: yall lied to me
Why heck, I once killed a bear with a chewing gum wrapper and a match, its all in how its done fellas! :D
|
RE: yall lied to me
Hell, I once killed a coyote at 300 yards with my semi-auto .22 Marlin, and when the empty bullet casing came flying out, it hit and killed a rabbit hiding in the bushes fifteen feet away[8D]
|
RE: yall lied to me
I'd of had to see it to beleive it, the part about killin' the rabbit!:D
|
RE: yall lied to me
I've killed coyote with .22 long rifle before. I used the Remington yellow jackets and they were all under 50 yds. I would agree it is not the best cartridge out there for coyote but it works in a pinch.

RE: yall lied to me
My father in law has shot many yotes with a .22, then he started using his 5mm he recovered more with the 5mm than he ever did with a .22

RE: yall lied to me
The old .22 doesnt have the knock down power of a faster bullet. Shot placement counts, but the heart stopping shock can make up for a misplaced round.
|
RE: yall lied to me
That's why i prefer to use a .458 for my varmint hunting. Even if you miss them with the bullet, the shock wave usually gets 'em[&:]

RE: yall lied to me
did you clearly ask your uncle if it were a .22lr etc...? or did he just say a 22?
many guys will say i used a 22 meaning a 22 caliber, which can be a .223, .22-250 etc...etc... either way I'm sure its possible to take a coyote with a .22lr, though not ideal at all. I'm pretty sure a .22 has probably killed most creatures in NA at least once.....I personally have heard of either a moose or brown bear being shot and killed with one. |

RE: yall lied to me
I'll tellya one other thing, If you could get them all up to 35 yards with no brush, knolls, hunters, callers or comin in the back door on ya, well yeah a 22lr could kill SOME yotes. After you have killed more than1 or 2 dogs you and your uncle would know that it dont always happen that way
|
RE: yall lied to me
i killed a 150# hog with a ear shot and .22 mag....i'm sure that a .22 would kill a coyote....but why risk wounding and losing one when you could easily put it down with a .223 or .243
