The .220 swift is a mean gun. Good luck finding a cheap one though. I think NEF makes a .204 single shot. I own several NEF and I like them. Yes they are single shots but you will be suprised on how disciplined you will become knowing you have to make that one shot count.

I shoot a .22-250 and love it. Not much left to rabbit sized critters, but great for coyotes.

I agree with Chris H. the 204 is the allaround best coyote gun on the market. If you want a gun you can use for other things the 204 is not for you, but if it is a varmit gun only, thats what you want. Fox, PD, woodchucks. Just look into it, you"ll see, good luck

I dont think best would be the right thing to say.Good or one of the choices.Best is a rifle that you can shoot well and fits you.
Not being picky but best is relative to the person shooting.

the 221 rem fireball is a fun cal. to hunt yotes, bobcat and chucks w/. does it matter bolt or singleshot or what action would you prefer? i think thes singleshot spartan rifles are pretty neat little rigs

204 or the 22-250 are my personal favorites although ive killed most of my yotes with a 300 wsm while deer hunting lol

22-250, you can do alot with it. and Its common ammo. Also you can't go wrong with a 223.

If you don't reload I don't see any point in buying a 221 or 218 bee or 222 or 220 swift..

I agree on checking into the regulation as well. I would imagine that you would be allowed any of the .22's, but the extra knowledge is only a phone call away.

Also, maybe I didn't see it written or maybe it simply wasn't, but what kind of yardages are you going to be dealing with on your hunts? I would think you could possibly shy away from some of the 400 yard cals. if you're only dealing with much shorter distances.

I'm personaly a fan of the .223

.22-250, .220 Swift, .243 win are the only 3 I'd ever consider.....

.22-250 awesome and popular
.220 Swift, many would say the best varmint round ever, though not as available as .22-250, but if you reload....

.243 great all around, from praire dogs to mule deer.....

That's similar to IL.....many think there is no centerfire....but from the regs you posted....all it says is no rifle over .22 caliber....

So that cancels the .243

I'd strongly recommend the .22-250 Rem. as you can find more rifle sin this chamber and ammo is more prevalent.....a .220 swift is awesome but may be more difficult to locate and unless you reload most .220 swift ammo is loaded closely to .22-250 levels.

I'm not a fan of the .204's or .17's, .223 is plenty small.....get a .22-250rem and you won't regret it.

Can consider a .223, though my vote's for the .22-250 Rem.

Thank you for the feedback Ruger,but as I live in the Commonwealth (read:KennedyCountry) there is no centerfire hunting here at all. Here are the regs straight out from the book.

8. HUNTING IMPLEMENTS: It is lawful to hunt fox, coyote, and bobcat with rifles, shotguns, handguns, or archery, provided that:

[blockquote]
(a) on wildlife management areas stocked with pheasant or quail, during the pheasant and quail season, only shotguns and archery may be used;
(b) handguns are restricted to those chambered not larger than .38 caliber, and rifles to those chambered not larger than .22caliber;
(c) coyote may be hunted with shotgun cartridges loaded with shot not larger than FF, provided that when coyote are hunted during the shotgun deer season, they may additionally be hunted with those shotgun cartridges that are lawful for the hunting of deer (i.e., including buckshot and slugs);
(d) fox and bobcat may be hunted with shotgun cartridges loaded with shot not larger than #1 birdshot.

So you see my situation ? I think I can go to .22 Hornet or magnum butno wider in diameter. (I have to check on that in more detail)

What I'm really asking here is if anyone can recommend a new rifle in any of those calibers in the$3-400. range, as I'm going to need a scope, bipod, calling gear etc. as well.
Thanks again for any help.
-Scottie
P.S. Any tips on the otherequipment or anything else, would surely be appreciated as well.
