All three of these combine the hunter's best friends: good equipment, luck and stupidity. Why else would we try long shots?
#1 whitetail off fencepost hilltop to hilltop - 478 yards with 7mm RemMag. Grossly underestimated range to be 375-400 but still got him. Six years later someone got a range finder and we measured it. Wish I had one then, cause I woulda done some REAL bragging.
#2 groundhog off sandbags on hood of truck - 529 yards with Tikka .25/06. Tried several shots over 2 summers to get that fat little pasture puppy. Laser rangefinder let me know he was 75 yards farther than I thought.
#3 whitetail deer out of permanent treestand (more like a treehouse) - 406 yards with same 7mm mag. A heated discussion and minor fist fight erupted over this one. I think I actually shot over the buck I wanted a hit a doe behind him, but my buddies were watching and thought she was in front of him. Like it mattered; I "missed" and we ate tenderoin and rib stew for dinner.

I would have to say when I was hunting greenheads, I pinged one down at app. 70 yards. In my estimation total luck. Or someone else shot it exactly when I did. I saw the thing fall but....nope never found it

Whitetail doe at 467 paces with a 7mm Mag. I was using a mail box as a rest across a cut corn field. I hit it on the second shot. I had guessed it at about 450 yards and had been shooting the ram at a local gun club pretty consistantly all summer. Perfect hit, dropped in her tracks. My second longest shot was 326 paces on a snowshoe rabbit. It was with a Encore 223 with 6-20x44 scope and a 52gr HP. First shot hit it on the top of th head just at the base of the ears. I didn' t tell my buddies but I had been aiming for a shoulder hit on it. I have done a lot of really long range target practice but these are my two farthest shots on game.

those all are some fine shots.. I prefer to hunt more than shoot, just my perfrence. not saying one is better than another. my longest shot was 100 yds 45-70 marlin 300 gr. hnted the deer for approx 2 hrs. before i could even get that close. he was old ad wise.
would sure enjoy seeing some fine shootng like you guys do though!

Got a deer off my dads freinds porch at about 300 yrds and a coyote running away from me at about 400 on the 4 th shot. I also shot a 4x4 in the head at 250yards, I was aming for the shoulder but jerked as i shot. I didnt believe my dad when he said it dropped.
