Hogs
How do you hunt hogs that can't be trapped? Has anyone had success calling them? I want to hunt without dogs.

RE: Hogs
I'll just take a wild stab of a guess since ive never hunted hogs because we dont have any around me. I guess you could do it the same as deer, that being either luck upon them, still hunt, stand, maybe bait i dont know.

RE: Hogs
Definitely use a stand and bait them if its legal in your state. Be careful cause hogs are very mean. I have heard that you can shoot a hog and he will go hide and wait till you come off your stand and attack you. Good thing you're not using dogs. I have heard of many a good hunting dog get killed by a hog. Good luck and be careful!

RE: Hogs
Hogs are territoral and can be patterened more so than deer. they usuall us the same trails to and from feeding areas.
we take a few hogs each year from tree stands on there trails.as for them waiting on you after the shot,I have never found this to be the facts.they can be a BAD BOY if wounded and cornered. if you can put out bait stations, that will work after they find it.usually just before dark and at first light just like deer. just courious, why can't they be trapped??? I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |
RE: Hogs
Shoot every hog you can.

RE: Hogs
Yes you can hunt them from a stand just like deer which is really good if you can pattern them. The real problem will be that hogs will leave the area for days or even weeks if they pattern you. I find it a lot more fun to spot and stalk them. As long as you work into the wind and keep some kind of cover between you and them it is relatively easy and IMO a lot more fun. There is also an element of danger when stalking them, especially if you get really close(50yds. or less). When wounded they are very likely to charge so you need have a tree close by to jump into. Hogs are a lot easier than deer once you find them. Their nomadic nature makes that a challenge.

Just courious, why can't they be trapped???

Some have been trapped on this place before, but now they will not go into the traps at all. There are hogs everywhere and it is rare to get one in a trap. It is a friend's place so I don't have access all the time. I can only go when he invites me. He only hunts them at night with a light but hasn't had much success. They learn fast. Smarter than most people I know. I hear that HOG WILD is good bait. Have you tried it? RE: Hogs
I just went hog hunting once about a year ago and man did i love it:) The guys we (my dad and I) were with knew the area well so we did both stalk hunting and i guess ' sat-on-butts' kindd. I got my first wild hog even though it was a Sow. I saw a big big boar but was too far away. I would love to go again and try with a bow as soon as i get good with it :)

RE: Hogs
Hogs are mean, remember " old yeller" ? Travis got maulled by one of them. And then the coyotes/wolves gave yeller rabies when they were fighting. I cried at the end.

RE: Hogs
I' m going hog hunting this weekend.
We' re spreading out corn this evening and hunting all day tomorrow. Sitting in a stand works. I find the most enjoyable form to be baiting and stalking. We don' t take our hog hunting too seriously. It' s more of a fun job. They need to be cleared, so we take some time out of our schedule to have fun outdoors. |
RE: Hogs
most success in this hot weather will be at nite. put out corn and sit in a stand.it is legal in texas to hunt hogs with a spotlight. you will hear them. when they start to tear into the corn put on the light.make sure you have a big gun. i use a 7mag and 45.70. shoot behind the ear. this will keep them from running off. also be very prepared to put a second round in them. they are as tough as my old lady.if you are going to be seperated along with other hunters carry a walkie talkie.
go to web site " oversized outfitters" . there is a pic in the trophy room of a hog i killed. i am in arlington and love to hunt hogs. give me a call and we can talk. |
RE: Hogs
I love to hunt old Sus scrofa.....feral hogs that is.
There are 2 kinds of land owners-one with a hog problem and the one who' s gonna have a hog problem. Ive killed probobly 50+ witha bow - the closest was 10 feet and the farthest was 20 yards. Never been charged by one. Shot my first hog of the season last year standing in my underwear and hunting boots right in front of the bunk house at 2' oclock in the morning. I was standing at the rear bumper and he was at the front bumper. I actually walked less than 3 feet from it on the way to get my bow out fo the back of the truck. Hog hunting kicks a$$. If enough guys hear would want to go right after this next hunting season - I' ll put one together. Should cost no more than $200 for whole weekend. Bowhunting only ofcourse. |

RE: Hogs
All I' ve got is a .270. Buddy' s got everything. I' d like to get something in lever-action, though. Something like a 45/70.
His folks live in Floresville, that' s where we went. We set stuff out, but due to transportation problems late that evening, we weren' t able to get out there. Oh well. Those SOBs aren' t going anywhere. Heck, they' ll probably double in number by the time we get back out. |
RE: Hogs
You can kill hogs just about any way imaginable... but you' re not going to kill them off. They reproduce like crazy, and just when you think you' ve got ' em all, you' ll have another 15.
The most fun way is to stalk them - 12 gauge pump and a good idea of where they are and where they' re going. It' s really easy to throw out some corn or put up a feeder... putting up a feeder will put them on a schedule, and much more than deer, will come running at the sound of the feeder. Hog Wild is good stuff, but corn works just as well - hogs are anything but picky eaters. Long story short, you don' t have to put too much thought into it. They' re tough, but a good shot with a 12 gauge or a decent-sized (.270, for instance) rifle will put them down. |
