Default Howling Yotes

I went outside at 1 am to let themy doggo to the bathroom. I said something to himand a coyote started howling, then another one and I won't be surprised if there were more than that. They were only probably 100-150 yards across the road from the house and were still going when I went back into the house.

NEver went after them before. How do I hunt them, do I call and what call do I use? What gun to use? Remington 870 12ga slug gun, Benalli Nova 12ga vent rib, or .22? What time of day is a good time to hunt them?

ive killed them at all times of the day, they are most active at night so you will likely see them more often at dusk or dawn hours. with a 22 or shotgun you are really limited and would need to get them in close but thats easier said than done honestly you would want a hi power rifle they usually dont come in real close unless they are young curious pups and sometimes they'll come in right on top of ya. you will also need calls like a rabbit distress and a mouse squeeker the best combinatin IMO. the rabbit distress call will only get them in so close maybe 200 yards would be the closest then ya want to use the mouse squeaker it will bring them in closer also the mouse squeaker is pretty discrete as its quiet and usually wont give your position away. coyote hunting is tricky, think of it as turkey and deer hunting rolled into one. If you are really interested i suggest reading a book on it the best book ive found sofar is "Coyote hunting: from head to tail" by Phil Simonski it really covers all the basics that you need to know lots of good advise that will put ya on song dogs. good luck

Oh really, I've seen many coyotes that came into mear feet with rabbit distress sounds only.

If a coyote can hear the sound, it doesn't matter how loud it is, it will have your position pin pointed, even from a few hundred yards. Even you said thatthe squeeker is going to bring them closer, but how can that beif the coyote can't figure out what your postion is?
Tell us again, how many coyotes do you kill a year?

Let me guess, the deer in your neck of the woods breed a couple times/year too! After all, why wouldn't they since there's no cold winters there![8D]

Even you said thatthe squeeker is going to bring them closer, but how can that beif the coyote can't figure out what your postion is? a mouse squeaker is much more discrete than a rabbit call.. with a coyote at 100 to 200 yards away it will beable to zero in on your exact location much faster with a loud call like a rabbit distress. with a mouse squeaker a yote will beable generalize on a rough location but not your exact location as fast as it would if you were sucking on your rabbit call at close ranges.
Tell us again, how many coyotes do you kill a year?howmany do you?? and I dont want to know homany your friends kill.. since you're such the flippin expert why dont you school us on the subject instead of following me around to every one of my posts and ridiculing my posts like you have been for the past week, whats your flippin deal man??

HighDesert, I tried to PM ya, but apparently your PM book is full. this is only the second post that I posted a disagreement with ya. I'm sorry, but how boring would the world be if we all just followed each other like sheep. My views are different than yours, for good reason.
Where do you get the idea that a coyote can't pin point your location when using a soft sound compared to a louder sound? I simply disagree. If a coyote can hear the sound, it has the location pin pointed pretty dang close even if the coyote is a few hundred yards away. Common knowledge!
Last season I only killed around 30 coyotes, I honestly don't count and not that I could count past 10 'cause I'd rnu out of fingers at that point![]BUT it's hard to shoot them when your operating a video camera, which I did more than operating a gun! I've been calling now for 21 seasons! Hardly qualify as a "arm chair expert" I know, but I'm learning from all the computer experts![8D]
This is only the 2nd post that I posted a disagreement with ya on. If that's enough to "turn me into the mods" about, than so be it. Ya got me shaking in my boots!

As far as the mear feet comment, I've got it documented on film, what more proof do I need? I've shot 5 with archery that were called in, a 6th while bow hunting deer! Of those, 3 are on film and a 4th was witnessed by 3 other people.

By the way, my original challenge still stands!

Highdesertwolf: Howler is right, If the coyote hears the sound it will most times pinpoint it to within a couple of feet real quick like. Their hearing is very very good. They can hear a lipsqueek at hundreds of yards in high winds. That means any sound.

Mouse squeeks (coaxers) IMO are more the user than the coyote. I have seen alot of guys use them and explain why they use them. In my experiance, either they come or not to any sound. I have a coaxer mouth call and Coaxer on my E-caller, I never use them. Maybe I will start to understand better if they are effective or not.

Something to remember, (hopeing NOT to start a debate) Arizona coyotes in someways are different than Colorado Coyotes. They are conditioned differently, depending on alot of variables. Food source, terrian, human interaction, territories and comfort zones and so-on. How close they may or may not respond COULD depend on how comfortable they are to going to an unknown sitiation(sp?)

I hear them quite often when the train comes thru in the evenings. The tracks are about 1/2 mile from my house but when the whistle blows the yotes start up. I kinda enjoy hearing them.
