RE: 22 LR and Coyotes

Danthehunter, now that you've told us how many you've killed with the 22 mag. and the 22lr, now tell us how many ran off and never recovered?
The biggest problem with the 22 lr. is that a coyote can be shot and run a long ways and leave no blood trail, and never be recovered!
I agree with the thinking that the 22lr. is best used to dispatch trappedcoyotes!

If you want to coyote hunt, get a coyote rifle. If you want to use your squirrel gun- squirrel hunt.

I never said how many I killed with them! But it is several, never lost one.If I was calling I always used my .22wmr standing field shots over70 to80 yards I used my .220 swift.Wait that is another .22 calibur!! Maybe I should use my .300wm or even better yet how about my .50bmg.

RE: 22 LR and Coyotes

Yeah, like the .22lr is comparable to the .220 swift!
Fact is the .220 swift has a solid track record of clean kills, and the .22 lr will never match that record, unless of course, we count kills in traps!

RE: 22 LR and Coyotes

You got that right!!! I love my swift and have taken my share of coyotes with it.That cartridge is the most compared to round of all time. But it still is the same calibur as a .22lr/.22wmr.I was in no way making a compariison between the two,but the post is about the.22lr and it can and has killed many yotes.I just dont think you have to blow them in two pieces to kill them.I am sitting here tring to think of any I have lost with my .22wmr and cant think of any!!!

iwill not pass up a shot at a standing coyoteat 50 yards or under when i'm squirrel or rabbit hunting with a .22. Always try to double tap or triple tap them with my Ruger 10/.22. Usually they just flop over and die.

.22lr isnt an ethical gun to use for yotes. I would go with a .220 up to a .243

I've had quite a few prarie dogs run back into their holes after a .22lr round . In fact ,, alot of them did that . Squirrels also can take a few hits without going down . I'm still shooting right over the backs of the coyotes around here ,, but I know better than to take a rimfire to do it .

"22lr isnt an ethical gun to use for yotes. I would go with a .220 up to a .243"

I'vekilled a thousand or so coyotes. It is not necessary to shoot them with a .220 Swift or 243.I have a Winchester Model 70 in .220 Swift that was made in 1940 but seldom use it. Most ofmy coyoteshave been killed with the .22 Hornet and .223 because they are cheaper to load.

Yes, i sometimes shoot them with a .22 if they are close enough. Nothing unethical with shooting any animal thatquickly dies.If your pararie dogs are running off after being shot with a .22 you ain't shooting them in the right place. No excuse for a squirrel needing more than one shot with a .22. Unless, of course, you are shooting them in the guts.
