any traps you set out SHOULD have a light coat of rust on them. it makes them take the dye and wax better. when you get a brand new trap it will have a light coat of oil on it that should be removed. boil it for a few minutes or take it to a car wash. if it is bad rust, like someone mentioned flaky rust then it will probably not last long
