22 mag, I would take heavier grains over speed anyday.

17 for accuracy, 22 for knock down power....but i think we are splitting hairs

RE: .17HMR vs. .22WMR

i am getting a new gun for yotes and i can get either a .17HMR or .22WMR because of money. im not sure which one to get. .17 shoots flatter but has 33 less ft./lbs at 150yds. which one?
How about the 204 Ruger
or a 243

At least they can be reloaded
And the gun cost about the same.

If it has to be either the 17 or 22mag... go with the 22 mag. its simple physics. Bigger projectile means more knock down power. Personally I use a 243 for yotes and its works wonders... definately worth looking at

.204 ruger would be better.

For yotes I would not Suggest .17 HMR or .22 MAG!!

But if you had to get one of them. I would suggest the .17 because you will get better accuracy at longer ranges the the .22 mag.

But I wouldn't shoot at coyotes further than 100 yards with the .17hmr.

go with the .20 grain hollow points and place your shot well and it should do ok.

the 17 has the velocity edge, so it will shoot a little flatter, however the 22mag has the energy edge, the 17 is so light, it quickly loses its energy after 150yds.where as the 22mag still has lots of steam at that distance. in a nutshell the 17 will shoot flatter but the 22mag holds its energy better.

I favor the 22 mag. I have a marlin 25mn that is every bit as accurateas any .17 I have ever shot. I understand the flat shooting aspect but I personally do not believe that one caliber is inherently more accurate than another. It has to do with the gun, shooter and amount of time, practice and preparation beforehand. JMO

I would think that you could get a decent used 222 or bigger for about the same price as a good .17 or .22 mag. That's what i would do if coyotes were my priority.

As for comparing the .17 vs. the .22 mag, I've knocked a crow out of the top of an oak tree at 240 yards with my .17. Dunno how many folks can say the same thing for their .22mag.

The 17HMR is extremly accurate andI would definatly recommend it over the 22 mag. I droped a seal with a 17HMR at 250 yards (give or take).
