.177 for Foxes???

I have a fox problem and I was going to use my bow but for a 50 yard shot would
a Gamo Shadow 100 work ok?

I want them to drop fast so would a .177 pellet gun drop a gray fox at 40 yards?

Head shot or chest shot?

RE: .177 for Foxes???

probably not, I shot a grey with a .17 hmr at 10 feet. double lunged it and it still ran 20 yards.

RE: .177 for Foxes???

I am with Browning it will probably not, where you live are you able to use a 22mag of some sorts???? but wait a minute if you check back later there will be a fella on here that will tell you he has done it and tell you how. He will have to google search it first, I think his screen name has a 09 at the end of it.:D

No, lumberjack, you're dead wrong.

He only uses a Savage .223 tactical.:D:D:D

I cant imagine the pellet gun working in this situation.

RE: .177 for Foxes???

I doubt .177 will suffice for what you want,50 yards??Why bother with such a close bunny shot anyway? What you really need to makethis sporting isaSavage tactical .223 preferably your uncles,At a range of at least 500yds, Because anything less then 400 is way to easy, Of course you will need WOLF FMJ ammo for this shot;)

I doubt the .177 will perform up to standards although I do think it COULD kill it. I don't recommend trying it.

I have that same pellet gun. I have a hard time killing blackbirds let alone anything that big.

Use that gun for the smaller stuff. I wouldn't go any bigger than rabbits with it.

Get a real gun or get them close enough with your bow.

Well, I wouldn't recommend it, but check this out. Don't think it was at 50 yards either.

RE: .177 for Foxes???

I was just wandering because I can easily hit them at 50 yards but I wasn't sure if it would kill them.

Uh, hell no. If you can hit the bottom of a coke can at 50 yards almost every time, then you can shoot it accurately enough, but there is no way it will have enough energy. At 50 yards that pellet is probably going less than 500fps. Maybe at less than 20 yards if you shot it in the head, but by no means should you try. I would give you a 99% chance of wounding it so that it would die a slow painful death by infection, if you even hit it.

RE: .177 for Foxes???

Try sucking on the back of your hand, it will make a faint squealling sound, get him at 20 yards and double lung him with the bow. WHACK, dead fox!

Bullet Hole Bailey 02-27-2007 12:02 PM

RE: .177 for Foxes???

Thanks BLINDER, ill try that

To answer your question, no a .177 will not kill or even come close to killing a fox.

LOL, I was just checking that rifle out on the web, man what a gimmick! It comes with a 3-9x50mm Illuminated Reticle MilDot scope! Now if that doesn't tell you that rifle is a lemon, then what will!?

RE: .177 for Foxes???

I am not trying to encourage it, but, here it is used in towns where they have a problem with fox. They pellet gun is shot just above the middle of it's eyes at close range. But, is only used in around towns where a small rifle cannot be used. So the answer is yes, howeverI wouldn't want to try it out.

RE: .177 for Foxes???

yeah.....well you are all wrong....I shot a 180 lb fox on a dead sprint from 300 meters out with my sling shot using high velocity stay puff marshmallows for pills.....ear holed it....those stay puffs gotta be around 3000 fps.

If I can do that, you can kill one with a pellet gun!

Haha....In reality, Ireally wouldn't try it...especially this time of year when the animal has it's winter coat....if you are already bordering on a velocity and energy minimum, that extra fur is gonna intensify that problem. Just my opinion...

Sorry fuzzy ,but ,they are hired to do just that with problem predators that are in towns by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Traps can not be used because of pets in towns and firearm controls prevent them shooting them with a rifle. But, nobody here has everseen a 180 lb fox before either!:DBut, wouldn't that be cool to shoot a world record like that! I also do not recommend shooting them with a pellet gun but, just stating the facts.

I was being more of a smart a## than anything else...I know there isn't a 180 lb fox running around.

Also, if you get any little projectile going 1500 ft/sec it is going to do some damage with the proper shot placement.

I would say....find another method if you have them means to though so you aren't just putting the poor animals eye out....or even worse....getting it wounded to have it live out the next three months of it's life miserable, finally dieing of either starvation because it cannot effectively hunt any longer, or possibly have it die from infection in anopen wound. That is not fair to the animal if you have an option, don't risk putting it through that.

Furthermore, just because theF&G does it....it doesn't make it right. I'm sure they are good at telling people when it is successful, but do not mention when they botch the program!
