Before whitetail hunting I wash my clothes and shower with unscented soap. Then I spray in the field with descent spray. This seems to work well for whitetail. I consider this to be time consuming and sort of a chore - but I dont mind it since I know the outcome if I dont do it.

Are coyotes as particullar about scent? How big of a factor is it for them?
What is your routine for scent for hunting yotes?

A coyotes senses are far better than any other animals. Their noses make Deers look stupid.

coyotes smell 1 part in 1 million!

The best cover scent to hunt coyotes is a scent of a coyote. Since your probably not gonna find coyote stinky stuff at walmart, just keep your cloths scent free like Deer hunting and play the wind going to and at your stand. That is your best line of defense!

That is untrue browning. Their smell is much much better than 1 part per million. Humans smell in 1 part per million. Coyotes is way better than that. Coyotes is something like 1 part per hundred million or one part per billion.

You can't hide your scent from a coyote, period!! Does it matter? Greatly! If a coyote smells human, it doesn't stand around trying to figure out how long ago the human was there, or how far away the human is, instead it begins to depart the area immidiately!
Can you wear enough cover scent to hide your scent? NO!! No matter what cover scent or how much of it you wear, the coyote will smell you. Period!!
When calling coyotes, always keep the wind in your favor and walk into the stand in an area where the coyote won't cross your tracks. Set up in a way that forces the coyote to expose itself in an open area before it can reach your scent cone, and then take the shot before it smells you!

If they can be compared to drug dogs at all this might give you an idea. A cop was talking once about how the dogs sense of smell works and how they can pic out stuff admist so many other things and it's because they smell individual scents. The example he used was that when there's a cheeseburger on the table humans smell a cheeseburger but dogs smell the bun, meat, lettuce, tomato, cheese, etc all individually.

Every time I think of scent control for coyote that comes to mind. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong please!

Fingerz: I believe coyotes smell 1 part per million and humans smell 1 part per hundred. My Info on this subject is at home and I am not but I will varify my info when I get home. At least for my own knowledge.

Howler: correct, but to a certain point as my experiance has shown. I depends on the area being hunted and the coyote/human interaction. In my area I stress MY area, coyotes hear cars, people and atv's all the time. They also smell us, see us and everything else. I do believe that I call more coyotes than I ever see because they sense me first and they get outta there. But on occasion I get that coyote that has no fear.

Once I was standing talkin to a partner after a stand, we heard a "hear I am" howl. we looked to find a coyote pacing back and forth looking right at us probably thinkin "wheres the crying rabbit?" that was about 200 yards away.

Once we were locating and had one come in silent to howls to about 25 yards. we were standing in a feild and my buddy was smoking a butt. I put my surefire in its eyes and it simply turned and trotted 25 more yards before turning for another look.

Up in Maine I had a coyote respond within 2 minutes, walked up to the caller and looked right at it then raised his head and stared at me. He was 6 feet away. His eyes where locked on mine. He stuck around until my buddy swung on him with his AR and a tree branch hit his rifle and made a "clink" sound. The coyote looked at my buddy and simply trotted off. The worst part about this one is NO shots were fired! We were both a bit suprised!!

So yes, do everything you can to eliminate your smell but play the wind and be still and you will be fine. Get up in a tree stand if you can.

True, however, most coyotes are hunted in low human density areas and in most of those areas the coyotes get shot at with shotguns, bows, rifles, from vehicles along roads, from little 'ol ladys front porches!![8D]SO inthose areas, if a coyote even thinks it smells human, it will USUALLY, (there are exceptions to every rule in coyote calling)turn tail and run.
Example of an exception! Two weeks ago I was filming over the shoulder of a single shooter that had his A.R. I called in a single coyote that he shot at about 40 yards, I kept calling and a second coyote came in. On his 12th shot, he killed the 2nd coyote. How many coyotes have you ever seen that did trun tail to run after the first or second shot? Not many!!
I've had coyotes plenty close that I swore should've/could've smelled me, but didn't react as I would've expected.
Like ya said, not all areas are the same! We all have to learn our core calling area and adapt to our calling conditions/situations!

And again Browning.204 is a moron. coyotes smell 10 times better than humans, they see 10 times better than humans. All around they are 10 times better. again get your facts straight, not only on this forum but others as well.

jake smith: what the heck are you talking about? of course coyotes smell ten times better, thats what I wrote! did you even read the post? I put humans smell in 1 part per hundred and coyotes smell in 1 part per million or more! as far as I am concerned that IS 10 times better and more!
