RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
I just walk through the woods normally. When I see one if its coming to me I stop and wait. If its the only one I see and its going away from me I run towards it since I can go faster on the ground than it in the trees. :D As you can tell Im not a very serious squirrel hunter, I take it in stride.

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
Strawberry...You need to identify the prime food sources in your area...Often it will be acorns, hickory nuts, beechnuts, corn or some other type of hard mast...
Then spend some time sitting quietly in areas near the food source..The squirrels will come to you... You can hunt them successfully by walking VERY slowly through the woods, again in areas where there is food for them..If you are walking around and not seeing any squirrels, chances are you are moving much too fast...You need to move VERY slowly, sometimes standing still for long periods of time, and look and listen for squirrels or sounds of them moving around and feeding.. |

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
I sit on a stump on an oak ridge and wait them out. Look for any movement. If you identify it as a squirrel, run up to the tree. If you have a buddy, have him circle around while you keep an eye on the one side. The squirrel will normally circle around away from him unless he ran in a hole. If he doesn't show and you're sure you ran to the right tree then he obviously hid and you should go sit some more. The reason I always run to the tree is becauseI don't have any luck sneaking up on squirrels. I prefer to just get up to the tree as fast as I can and start looking. We normally get half the squirrels we spot.
Iuse a 12 gauge and any shotgun shells I have around. I don't eat my squirrels so the only thing that matters is getting them.:DHave fun! By the way, be careful when you run up to the trees. It could be dangerous. |
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
when I squirrel hunt Ill wear camo and sit still with my back to a tree with my shotgun across my lap and small radio with speakers playing my favorite country station.

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
i just walk until i find nests then do the dang thing. sometimes that includes sitting and waiting, sometimes it includes shooting branches very close to the nest to scare them out. for some reason i've taken some with that method. you'd think they would stay in the nest thinking they're hidden but 'eh? anyway, it just depends on how the spot "feels" to me

RE: what is your squirrel hunting method?
I hunt them just as pygmy advised you to do, its very affective.
here is a picture of a two day hunt my son and I had using pygmy's technique. I also would like you to know I cleaned a canned all the game, The pressure cooker even makes squirrels tender. ![]() |
RE: what is your squirrel hunting method?
I have tried shooting bysquirrel nests and it doesn't work. I've literally shot hundreds and never had a squirrel come out. Waiting for them to show is the only way to do it--I think.

RE: what is your squirrel hunting method?
I have the perfect system. I only hunt on sunny afternoons. I have a large lunch around11:30. I get in the woods by 1:00 PM. I then fall asleep for an afternoon nap. I sleep til 3:00 PM. My snoring calls in all the squirrels for miles. I wake up, shoot them all, and am home by 5:00. It has taken many years to perfect this system. Try it, it really works.
My secret to squirrel hunting was always going with my dad. It did not matter if we saw a squirrel or not. It was just fun to spend time with my dad. He passed last year, and I have not been able to bring myself to go squirrel hunting since. Tom. |

head0001, the reason I hunt today and love it so muchis because of my dad,he passed three years ago this month, and every time I'm out running my beagles I wish he was with me! But you can thank GOD for the great times you did have with him ,and when you get yourself out squirrel hunting again ,It'll bring back some great times, andsome tears. Also remember to pass along the rich heritage we have and cherish, I'm sure there is a young lad or lass that would love to have you give them the opportunity to create happy memories as we all have had. After all , when it comes right down to it, THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT!

ORIGINAL: metaldonnieg i just walk until i find nests then do the dang thing. sometimes that includes sitting and waiting, sometimes it includes shooting branches very close to the nest to scare them out. I prefer the 3 S method, See 'em, Shoot 'em, Skin 'em. Sneaking usually wastes my time, and I don't hunt with a dog, so I have my shotgun set up for 30 yard shots using 6-7.5 shot through a modified choke. Those cocky little bassturds will normally sit right where they are with me that far away, much to their surprise when the pellets hit. Even 7.5s will take them down with one shot at 30 yards with a tight pattern like that, and by the time they get there they still have enough energy to kill the squirrel without burying the pellets much past the skin. I usually just have to flick out a couple at most. |
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
Walk very very slow. You should only cover about 50 yards at most. Every 50 or so yards, you should stop and wait for 15 to 20 minutes. After a few minutes of silence after walking bark a little with the squirrell call. (if you have one) It's a great way to kill squirrells and pass time. I usually walk and pick up pecans and while I'm sitting and waiting. I'll eat the pecans. Makes the time go by faster.

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
I hunt in Kansas and do the same thing walk and sit or I sitinmy ground blind I have for deer and pick them off at 50 yards.

RE: what is your squirrel hunting method?
I find a area where it was thick with squirrels, then sit down (w/ full camo on) and make a sqeaking noise I heard a single squirrel make once then squirrels came in from all over to its tree. that gives me the oportunity to hide and get them in an ambush, my prefered way of hunting any thing really. when I am with friends we will usually trek into the woods and stalk quietly stoping every 5 steps or so to listen and look around for them dern squirrels. then when we find one we will tree it and send some one around the tree. squirrels like the run around to the opposite side of the tree when the see you coming. they think they are invisible when they do that. no matter what they try to keep the tree between you and them. you can use that to drive one around to your friends but this technique requires that you be absolutely shure of your target and back ground before fireing. and also you must know exactly where all hunting company is at all times. other wise some body is gona get shot.

I do the ol' sit and wait. Got a really comfortable tree on the side of a hill that I always sit at. Besides, if there's nothing moving, I can get a nap in. :)

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
Still hunting, or the slow stalking method are good when there is a lot of leaves and other cover. This time of the year when the leaves are gone and a lot of the nuts have fallen to the ground, that's where you find many squirrels. Sometimes by doing a brisk walk thru the woods without trying to stay quiet you can jump them almost like rabbits. At least that's how we get a lot of squirrels during late season rabbit hunts. I could have killed a dozen of them with my pistol using that method while running traps last weekend.

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
Switchback, I know the sound you're talking about, almost like a blackbird. You can also make that sound with the side of your mouth, between your tounge, jaw, and teeth.

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
Best way to see squirrels: go deer hunting.
I saw a dozen squirrels in my first 2 days of hunting and all but 3 were within range. 1 even sqwacked at me from 10 feet away for a solid 5 min. |
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
hunt with a well trained dog. i thought squirrel hunting was easy till i went with my friend and his dog. it treed nearly every 5 minutes. it was really fun and alot easier than any other method.
if no dog, then just sit where you know there are squirrels and wait. if you want to still hunt, i advise walking briskly and jumping them like rabbits. take a shotgun because running squirrels are hard with a .22. walking slow and quiet works better when the leaves are still on the trees and there arent 100000000 leaves to crunch your feet on. |
RE: what is your squirrel hunting method?
well if they are tree squirrels then look for trees that produce nuts b/c those are the trees the squirrels like best. Also a tactic that i use is listening for their barking noices then i use spot and staulk. If they are ground squirrels then just find a hole and wait for a dump one to stick its head out.hahahah

RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
We have a corn pile in our woods. Park our butts about 50 yards away and wait for movement... When we get bored we walk slow through the woods waiting for movement. I also keep tabs on the stands that they drove me crazy during deer season and sit in those stands and pick them off.
|
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
Early in the season I find the hicory trees with fresh cut nut shells under them and will go and sit under them early in the morning and wait for them to come and get there breakfast. You can tell when there coming because the tree tops full of leaves start bounceing around.
This time of year I will go and sit either at the bottom of a rivine or at the top watching the bottom. Alot of the acorns and hicory nuts are abundant their either from being washed there from the stream or being funneled into the bottom from the hill sides going into the rivines. |
RE: what is your squirrel hunting method?
I hunt them just like deer. They are always around my deer stands making an incredible amount of noise when I'm deer hunting so I just sit out near my stands just before light and wait. Once the sun comes up they just come out everywhere and there is always a shot.

RE: what is your squirrel hunting method?
I usually walk into the woods and pick a an area of nut trees that looks good (look for fresh cuttings from nuts they have eaten) and sit and wait for awhile. If no activity, I walk 20-30 yards and sit again. I try to get them w/o them ever seeing me, BUT if I tree one that knows I'm there I have a little trick my grandfather taught me years ago.
I bring some string, about 20-30 feet. I tie it to a bush on the back side of the tree and then walk to the front. Then I'll sit still for about 2-3 min, then start tugging the string. The movement in the bush will drive him back around to the side of the tree I'm on. Couple of other tricks I learned frommy grandfather that he carried over from when he had to hunt for food (don't kill things, don't eat) many years ago that I don't do anymore, and really might not be legal. When one gets in a den tree, he showed me two things that work. Either build a little fire w/ wet stuff in a hole at the bottom and smoke him out, OR take a green brier and start feeing it into the hole, twisting it. As you twist the brier, you'll catch him somtimes, then you pull him out and smack him on the tree before you get bit. |
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
shooting the nest will almost always work
|
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
sitting under the trees with my grandson best way to hunt them
:D:D:D |
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
you better check your local laws in nc its illegal to shoot nests
|
RE: what is your squirel hunting method?
Law against shooting nests? What's the world comin to? I grew up doing that......those were the days. My squirrel hunting method is to go deer hunting. I seem to always see hundreds of those boogers when I deer hunt, so I just wake up and go like I'm deer hunting...VERY EARLY. Most people don't get in the woods early to squirrel hunt, they just walk in the woods whenever and think squirrels are gonna be running everywhere. Go early andslip in the woods where there's nuts, squirrels are always tryin to get a nut.
