Default looking for a good all around varmint rifle

Im from ohio so 400 yards is the most i would mostly be taking and i was going to get a Savage 10FP .223 Tactical for basically varmints, Ex: groundhogs, prarie dogs, coyotes...... my dad was also going to get a Savage .204 and i was wondering if that is a good caliber for the same kind of varmints. THANKS!!!!

i have a Savage 10FP .223 and i can get all of the holes to touch at 100 yards and 200 most of them touch. Ive heard some good things about Stephens. Savage is a really good company and for the price you cant beat it.

The 204 is pricey & not worth taking over a 223...imo

.22-250 works great for me.

i like my remmy model 788 in .243 but a 22-250, 220 swift or .223 will work as well. .204 will do nothing as well or better than any of the above listed.

the 204 isjust as good or betterthen the above faster is just as accurate if not more kills em just as dead only thing is the price and its new it will go down. i have the 204 coyotes drop it is good good gun.we can argue this all day but i think its better i know its faster proof there now i guess shooter is the factor in accuracy i hear 22-250 and the others r great guns but if i had to choose any except 204 id get 22-250 suppose be real nice

thanks,silent

.223 Rem. is great, but I think a .243 win.or 25-06 rem.is more sutable for 400 yards.

I also live in Ohio and I love to hunt groundhogs. Go with a 22-250. I have both the 22-250 and 223 and the 22-250 is better for longer shots, IMHO. I have taken shots well past 400 yds. with mine and it is better suited for longer shots.

Actually, the 22-250 could be loaded with a 35 gr. berger bullet and achieve 4600+ fps! Getting that load to shoot accurately might be an issue, and barrel life would be an issue.
Also, the .223 WSSM can also reach the 4600 fps with a 40 gr. bullet! But far as I'm concerned, I'd never own a .223 WSSM!
The .204 is been prooven to kill coyotes very well, out to 300 yards and beyond. It will be a caliber that lives a long life, I beleive. Unlike the .223 WSSM! Is the .204 better than the 22-250, at what? I'd guess it's more fur friendly, and that would be a big plus for anyone wanting to sell the hides!

The .204 ismore fur frendlyfor coyotes that the 22-250 if your shooting past 250 yards. Anything closer it taked a softball size chunk out of the other side when the bullet passes through.
