Default Trapping fox???

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the site, really like it, and new to trapping. Actually, I've never trapped anything before. I'm looking for information on trapping fox. I bow hunt in an area where the red fox population is soaring. I haven't seen a fox in this area since I was a kid. Now, I see them everytime I'm in the woods.

1st - What type of traps should I buy for fox?
2nd - How should I set them up, i.e. location?
3rd - What do I put on the trap to lure them in?
4th - Is there a way to keep the racoons away or will I just have to hope to trap a fox?

I appreciate any advice you can give. If I left anything out, please fill in any info. I need to be successful.

Thank you

This will be my second year trapping and the first animal I ever trapped was a silver fox and I didn't even know what a silver fox looked like so it was a real supprise. Check out this site http://www.trapperman.com/ look at Basic sets and trapper tips. The trap that you should use is a foothold #1 3/4 or #2, 1 3/4 if their are just reds and #2 if their are yotes too.

I agree with the above site. Secondly, try to find the areas that are being used by the foxes; area with tracks, scat, and places where you see them. Try the basic dirthole set with a commercial attractant. Make sure you are scent free and take your time making the set. One well made set is better than three made unproperly.

If you want to eliminate non target catches try making 2 sets about 10ft apart, place lure and bait in one set, but dont put a trap in this one, then make another set with no bait in it. this is the one you want your trap in. coons, opposums, dogs cats almost always go for the smell. the foxes do to, but they just cant help to investigate that other hole in the ground with no smell coming from it. works great!! Your best bet for foxes, is to set along the edge of cover, places like a field with a woods edge. crop changes corn meeting grass, fencelines connecting tractor lanes. always place that set so that the wind carries the odor from lure or urine or bait to the fox or else he will just walk right by it. just set upwind of the edges or tractor roads or fencelines. as far as traps go, 1 1/2 are fine for fox, but you may get an occasional coyote so I suggest 1.75 they work great for fox, and I have never lost a coyote in one yet. The most important tip I can give you is to make sure you bed those traps solid, I will show you an awesome set that I garentee will catch you some fox. I will have my daughter videotape and we will post it for all to see. that is if you are not trapping in my area.
