Welcome to the board Njplotts!! I've been coon hunting with dogs a couple times, but that's about it. I've seen some crazy things with coons involved though. A quick coon story, a year ago while calling coyotes, there was a coon that kept coming out of a hole in a bank each time we would call, after no coyotes came in, one of the guys with me said that he could "squall the coon out of the hole" NEW TO ME! He had me get on the bank above the hole with my bow, told me to get ready, and he simply did just that, he squalled with his mouth, brought the coon right out of the hole, and I arrowed it. He said he did this on a regular basis, squalls them out of trickle pipes, out of trees etc. The few times I've been coon hunting with dogs, it was fun, but not many coons around here, more back home in Ks., so chances to go are limited! Again, welcome!! Also, I believe the guys use blue ticks back home.

I hunted with a walker until early may when I had to put the old boy down,was ate up with cancer and drugs couldn't save him. Guess I'm done now, ain't a dog alive that could take his place and I'd feel like I was cheating him by hunting another. Sounds silly, eh?

i ran walkers since i was 7 till about 12...then we moved and we got rid of the dogs and now we live with even more houses around and we feel a good hunting dog cant be a house dog..many of my dads friends dogs were house pets too and ran like it...when our dogs were out they meant buisness..so were dogless now..i miss them good ole days of running the coon hounds..i miss that sound of when they strike a hot track..or hit the tree...ooooo i want a dog soo bad! i hope one day i can talk my dad into letting me put on out in the yard!

Dont believe it, my old dog was an excellent house dog and topnotch in the woods, I swear on a stack of bibles that hound NEVER ran or treed anything other than a coon!!!! If he opened once it was time to grab the rifle ad start walking cause he was gonna tree,no if's,and's or but's about it. He would on rare occasions miss the mark but rare indeed.

I hunted a few down here in the swamps of Louisiana in Laplace, and I want you to check this out, my dog is a flop eared Doberman Pincsher. One of the best darn hunting dogs ya can get. I know, ya going say a Doberman?, but thats right, and on top of that, one hell of a security dog with the male.

RackmasterQuad; with racoon rabies spread through NY, do you have to take any special precautions when coon hunting? We almost have fox rabies under control in Ontario, now we're trying to keep racoon rabies from crossing the Ontario/NY border. In the Niagara peninsula they're actually trapping and vaccinating all the racoons within miles of the border.

RackmasterQuad;
Our coon population is very good! The problem is places to hunt.
I took 2 young dogs (2 yrs. old the end of the month) last night,
Had 6 tracks treed 5, home in 2 hrs. But that was a great night!
I don't post on CC anymore. When the site opened years ago the people using CC hunted, now all they do is cry & stab each other in the back. I have met & hunted with alot of them from CC over the years. 5 years ago I bought a dog listed on CC in Ark. Went there & hunted her & been back every year to hunt with the guy that sold her to me.
Where in NY are you?
