What left this track?

Got my own idea, but appreciate your help. In Virginia, but don't let that rule anything out. Thanks

It's got extended claws, so we know its not a cat of any sort. And judging by the size, I would say it is a large dog / coyote.

I know where this is headed but it is definately not a cat of any species - Cat tracks have retractable claws and they would not be noticed in the track. It's a dog of some type but its gotta be a big one.

Domestic dog by the looks of it... a hint is that domestic dogs tend to have a more "circular" track as a whole withspreadout toes, and wild dogs tend to have "oval" tracks with tight toes, oftentimes being able to see fur between them. Also, wild dogs tend to have one track at a time, not two on top of eachother as the picture shows. Mud can have an affect on the toes, spreading, but by the looks of it, it's just a big domestic dog-- especially because coyotes don't have tracks that large--generally. Another good indicator for species is if the tracks run in a straight line, as they would for a coyote, or if they wander like a fox would. Hope this helps.

from the looks of the nail prints the nails seem to be alot longer then what you would find on a non domesticated animal. the track is deffinately of a domestic dog from the size of the track it would be a large dog maybe labrador or an other breed similar in size. you might look around the area where the track was found and see if you can see anyones dogs in the area. 10 out of 10 that track belongs to a large local dog in your area.

It's tough to know for sure without seeing the actual animal. As far as the toes being spread out that doesn't mean it's a pet dog. When tracking coyotes in soft mud their toes tend to splay making them appear more spread out. If this was on a harder surface then you would notice the toes closer together. I have also seen yote tracks where the nails are clearly visable such as this, once again due to the soft soil. As far as their feet being the same size below is a pic of yote tracks that clearly show the hind feet as being smaller than the front but in other cases they were closer to the same size.

Here is a pic that shows how a yote's toes can splay in soft mud as well as have well defined claws.

All this being said I still think that the track is probably that of a domestic dog. It just appears too large. If you also notice that in your pic the claws just left large holes in the soil without any sign of indentation between the claw and the toe pad. I usually see this in domestic dogs because their claws can be very long and curved thus resulting in such a print. If you look at the yote you can see how his claws are always kept worn down and even though the claws left a print they appear to be connected to the toe pad. This is just my humble opinion and in all honesty it could very well be either one.

It's definately a domestic dog track. It is not a chihuahua either! It's a pretty good-sized dog.
