Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
Hey everyon this is my first time posting so if this has been discussed please don't flame me for it. HAHA
I got Rem 700 in 22-250 for me and my gf's 4th anniversary and was wondering about a scope for it. Right now I have a 3-12x50 BSA on it that just insn't gonna cut it. I have a leupold 4-12x50 on my 300 and it's just hard to beat. What would be a good power scope for the gun, not wanting to spend 400 bucks. I was looking into the Leupold VX-1 or Rifleman in 4-12x40 because of the zoom, but like the 3-9x50 for the wide field of view and light gathering. I will probably be shooting as far as I can see, haha from 1yd to 500yds prolly. What would be the best power in your opinions? Thanks for the Help, Kyle |
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
i would stick with a 3-9x40 for that close of distance. i would also go with the burris fullfield on scopes if you are not wanting to spend alot. they are real nice and theyhave a ballistic plex reticle which compensates bullet drop from 100 to 500 yards. sorta like a milddot scope and they only range about 160 in price.they do make this scope in higher powers as well for not much more money if you decide to go that rout. good luck

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
I dont like a 3x9 scope for shots that long. I would rather have a scope like a Nikon buckmaster 4-14x or a Weaver classic 4-16x(which is on my 22-250) or a Bushnell 5-15x 3200. These scopes are all in cheaper price range and seem to be pretty nice.
A 4-12 Leupold rifleman is way over price at 225ish for the quality of that scope. IMO they are no way worth that kind of money. A few good sites to check out to order a scope are www.natchezss.com www.dnrsports.com or ebay Natchezz has the 4-14x refurbished Buckmaster for 229. Which is a pretty good deal. |
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
I have always gotten along fine with a 3-9X40 Buckmaster on top of my .223. My 25-06 has a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40, which is about perfect for any varmint rifle. It is a good scope, but unless your getting a VX-III, you'd be better off with a Monarch or a Buckmaster. The less expensive Leupolds still cost more to deliver the same results as a Nikon.

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
Hey everyone thanks for the info. I was kinda joking about the 1 yrd it will probably be at least 75 yrds. Looking at the links Duckbutter sent I think I may go with the nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x40 SF Mil Dot. are the mildots for anything in particular or are they for mainly prairie doggin? How would that choice be for little over 200 bucks?

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
If you like the scope on your .300, why not put it on your 22-250. I like being able to see a wide view through my scope when im hunting, it makes it easier to see what youre shooting at.
|
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
Well my 300 is my deer gun and also silver where my 250 is black. I would get another but they are a little expensive for now.
|
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
Youll be happy with that Buckmaster. And no the Riflemen scopes are not in the same class as the Buckmasters and the 3200's. I have 3 Leupolds 2 VX IIs and 1 VX III and those scopes are just as good as a VX II just a 100-150 cheaper. IMO the Leupolds are way over priced for what you get compared to other brands.

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
What do you think about the reticle? Should I go with the mildot or nikoplex?
|
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
Well thats up to you. If your talking varmit scope the mildot is a cool idea for the longer shots but I think its more of a personal preference more than ones better then the other to honest with you. I would prob go with the Nikoplex but thats what Im used to, I dont thinks its any better then Mil-dot, actually the Mil-dot is prob better for most people. If you like or get used toit you'll be fine. I think you can argue it either way.
Either way alot of practice will have to go in to those 300yards + shots. Good luck with what you decide and try to get some nice bases rings for it also. Like the Leupold or Burris. |
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
My brothers Stevens 200 in 22-250 has a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40mm with the rainguard coating and its perfect for open country shooting. Can't beat the rainguard for cold weather shooting, but the higher power does seem to make close range shots a more difficult arrangement but thats ok too. Like Duckbutter48 said practice is more important and scope choice is a personal thing and most answers are biased anyways, go with what you like and practice, practice, practice!

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
I think it is just a heavy duplex.

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
All this Leupold bashing and the pricing complaints are a little tiresome...:D Easy guys/girls , easy. Leupold is a great company, more expensive sure, but quality is what you pay for. Guess people didn't see the new rules for the knocking on opnions..... From BSA to Nikon, you have many choices obviously, but I would try to fork a little more money in the scope than be sorry later that you hadn't. It could be a Leupold, it could be a Nikon, or it could be a good old bushnell, providing it can handle the shock of the selected chambered rifle.Just my honest opinion.

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
CoyoteS. I saw the new rules. I didnt think saying a scope is overpriced is really nocking the company though. What I mean buy overpriced for example is if you take the 300$ for a Vari-x II 3-9-40 and buy a Burris or Nikon or Bushnell for 300$ you'll have a better scope in one of the other 3. I again dont think that is bashing Leupold. They are good scopes just I have 3 of them just think you can get a better deal with other stuff.
The Nikoplex is just a standard X-hairs not heavy or thin. Just like Pentax calls it a Pentaplex just a nifty way to name itbut it just the regular sites. |
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
I really appreciate the help with finding a scope. I know what you are talking about Duck with the scope. The VX-ll seems to be a great scope for me, but was pretty expensive, haha.
The Nikon seems to be what alot of people are liking in quality and the reviews are pretty good. I will try the buckmaster with mildot and see what happens. Any other opinions welcome. Thanks again, Kyle |

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
i have a Remington 22-250 model 700 vls. I currently have a Leupold vari-x II 3-9 and will soon be upgrading to a scope with atleast 14 power. the 3-9 was nice at first but shots out pass 300 yards the 3-9 just doesnt give you the accuracy.

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
Well after doing a little more research on scopes I have found many people like the swift scopes. Also last week I went to a local gunshop that sells them and found a nice 4-12x50mm for $180 and it has over the counter warranty which is a nice piece of mind. I looked through it along with the 6-24x50mm and they seem like they have great optics.
For coyote hunting would the 4-12x50mm be enough? I won't be varmint hunting because around here most of the prairie dogs have been poisoned out (sux for me). Another reason I may go with the 4-12 is it is lighter, shorter and no adjustable objective. Opinions? |
RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
I have a weaver V16 on my 22-250. it's a very good scope but I'm going to replace it just because I have money burning a hole in my pocket! I also have a Nikon monarch 4-12 that Is a little better as far as brightness and focus. I don't agree with all the deer hunter opinionsI would hate to use a 3-9 on a small varmint at 300 yds Yes I know it can be done but it is so much nicer to shoot a squirrel at 300 thru a 16 or 20 power. I just wasn't satisfied with a buck master or fullfield not saying there badI just always go middle of the road. The weaver V seriesis a very good scope mine is four YO and no problems and is way under 400.00

RE: Scope for 22-250 coyote gun
