Default New to small game

I have not hunted small game at all. It sounds kind of cool. What do you guys think of a 22-250? I have one of those. I have never shot it. How about a 40s&w pistol? I would want to use both of those. What do you guys think about them. Can you please tell me about small game. How about the eating?

If you plan on eating any of the small game i would not use those. They will blow the animals apart. all u need is a 22lr or any gauge of shotgun from my personal favorite the 410 up to a 12ga with #6 shot and your set to go. As far as eating squirrel rabbit ringneck are as good as it comes if prepared right. They are darn good eating. Just try to use a different gun than the 22-250 or 40s&w as they are way to large.

take that 22-250, shoot it at say, a pumpkin, and tell me if you would take it squirrel hunting

a shotgun with the right loads will get you anything from squirrels to deer.personally i shoot sqrls and rabs with a .22, headshots are much less meat damage.

i suggest a ruger 10/22 and any NEF single shot will do you for any small game situation, both are fairly inexpensive and are very effective

squirrels: I use only my .22lr, bow, or pellet gun just for the challenge, my .22 is a ruger 10/22 w/ 4x scope on, i just sit and wait by some oaks or hickory trees

rabbits: I use 12 or20 with my dogs (beagles) depending on the area i am hunting say i am hunting in willows or canary grass i will use my 12 for better penetration through the thick stuff

pheasants: i use my 12 or 20 depending on what i feel like bringing when i have my beagles. with #6 or #7.5 6 i found is better

yotes and fox i go with a hunting party with dogs and use 12 gauge buckshot or my uncles .223

i have beagles trained on rabbits, pheasants and not squirrels just because them squirrels are a nusience and if i see one in the woods while i am doing any other hunting it will drop and train the dogs not to after the squirrel but then sneak it into my vest

good luck
