.22 Long Rifle Vs. Long

Can anybody tell me if there is that big of a difference in .22Lr and .22L?

about the only differance that i have ever seen in the two was bullet weight and slight differance in powder. the .22 long will have around 20 grains of lead. the long rifle will have somewhere around 40 grains of lead. the .22 long is just a beefed up .22 short with a bit more powder. :)

another point is that .22 longs are no longer in production. They have been replaced with the .22 CB Long, which has a 20 grain slug and no powder, only priming mixture. The velocity is still enough to kill small animals at close ranges and is also very quiet.

the cb longs do have powder bub, take one apart. Ill post a pic later to prove it. it is special blend though that limits the muzzle velocity to about 600 fps. I use cb longs in my ruger 10-22 for yard pest control. they wont cycle the action but you can manually cycle the action and they eject and chamber just fine.

Well, whatdayaknow! My bad. I've never actually shot the CB Longs. I just went to my cartridge information web site and that's what they had down. Wonder how they could get that wrong.

I was actually curious about what the difference was too. I understand now. Good post :)

I use the cb shorts for cats and whatnot in my yard seems to be deadly out to 20 or so yrds if you hit em right.

Looking over the facts now, I see that CCI AND Aquila both make the CB Longs. The difference between the 2 is that the Aquila really DOESN'T have any powder and has a slower velocity and half the punch of the CCI's. CCI's CB Longs produce 30ftlbs & 735fps at the muzzle, while the Aquila only has 15ftlbs & 575fps at the muzzle. Not bad for just priming mixture. All in all, a round traveling less than 1,000fps will make considerably less noise than one that exceeds that speed, as that's the sound barrier.

how much louder are the sub 1000 fps bullets opposed to a pellet gun?

UThunter the cci .22 shorts are super quiet. they are about as loud as a crossman ten pump bb gun. i have also tried the remington .22 shorts but they are almost as loud as a regular .22. both shot pretty good out to 40 and 50 yards. :)
