The original 7x57 (military loads) would be fine in the 96 however the 7mm-08 as originally loaded would not be. With loads in that pressure range regardless of the caliber the 96 would handle them....

It is an absolute NO NO. The 96 was not built to withstand those pressures on a every day basis. Many were chambered to 308 which is a NO NO as well and trouble resulted.
