As someone that has both a mark V in 257 weatherby and howa/vanguard/Smith and wesson, the mark v action to me is smoother. And I believe is a better action then the howa. The howa is a good action...

The older ones have two way safeties. Also Mossberg had their name on it too, as the Mossberg 1500, 1550, and 1700 I have 2 vanguards, a smith and wesson, and a howa. All nice rifles, a real bargain....
