I think the M2 is a necked down 22 long rifle, the way the HMR is a necked down 22 mag.

Gun weights being equal... my thinking would be that the 12guage slug would have more foot-pounds of recoil. BUT, and this is a big but, The 30-378wby would be sending that gun back at you a LOT...

If you were going to buy a Marlin lever, My vote would be for the 45-70. It can handle loads that match the .450, yet you can buy "dumbed-down" factory loads (300 grains at approx. 1800 fps) that...

The 20 gauge will definately do the trick. My little brother swears by his NEF single shot 20. I agree with wingbone, make sure its got a full or xtra full choke, and can shoot 3 inch mags. and...

I personally like the 18.5" better, it just feels more balanced. I don't think Marlin ports the barrels on these rifles anymore... but it doesn't matter especially if youre just shooting the factory...
