I have a new frontier 50 cal muzzleloader and putting a open red dot scope on it was trying to find out which base I need to use. Can I use a base designed for a shotgun barrel or something else.

I like quick release on my muzzle loader. I just picked up steel warne weaver style bases for my new 45-70. Then went with QRW Leopold. THough other companies make them. I went with low mounts, nice cheek weld. 33 objective. Not sure if 40 would clear.

So google your model and brand of bases.

While I do think alot of people fail to put effort in, and expect others to google it for them, I don't think this is one. If he would have asked which Leopold rings fit my rifle than ya.
