If you want to shoot game at 100,200,300,400,500,600,700,800,900,1000.......... you have to paper those ranges to be what I would call ethical. And not just in perfect conditions either shoot those ranges on windy days too. That is the only true way you know for sure what your bullet is doing.
"I shot my elk at 800 yards and held 12 inches over it's back" B.S.................... Doesn't take long to sort out those BS story's. |

I'm confused, so nobody can use hold over for long range shots?

If Blackelk is REALLY meaning literally 12" over it's back, then sure, I agree, a foot over it's back isn't a proper hold-over for pretty much ANY round. BUT, I mostly assumed he was pulling 12" out of his hat, and moreso making a point that hold-over isn't the way to make long range shots.
I used plex reticle and non-turret scopes for a long time, then switched up to mil-dot scopes. Sure, I have a scaled reference so it's not pure hold over like the plex was, but it's still hold over. Prime example: Two seasons ago I held over 30" with my wife's rifle and delivered a double heart and lung shot, plex reticle Nikon 4.5-14x40mm scope. No, it wasn't a super long range shot since it was a slow flying round, but 30" of hold over is a big drop to compensate for with a plex. Not gonna play games to hear someone call BS on me for it. |
rhe vari-x III's had another scale on the power ring to tell you the inches at that power from the crosshair to the thick part of the plex, I used it to make my longest holdover kill at 626 yards, been so long ago I forgot most of the details. that's why I don't post much about it, without the facts of what I did to make the shot I'm defenceless when the flaming starts.

Nomercy,
It wasn't in references to using hold overs for shooting game, which I do myself on a regular basis. The reference was to someone telling you a BS story which you know is a farse about shooting. If I was to sight in my 300 WM with my particular load at 300 yards it still drops about 87 inches at 800 yards, if I held a foot over it's back then the bullet would drop well below the elks hooves. It was for a example only of some stories I've heard people say about shooting at game, nothing more nothing less. |
800 yards requires target turrets IMO.
I'm not capable with my "ballistic plex" (BDC type) reticle - but that's okay with me. :-) |

RR pretty impressive... I can't wait until things slow down a bit this winter and I get to go play. Not being able to go to all my regular shoots this year has created a lot of anxiety for some down time and being able to put some lead into the air.
