Default Good Rifle Scope?

How much money do you want to spend?
You answered your own question.
Nikon and Leupold are good rifle scopes.
IMHO across their lines Nikon gives you the best value for the dollar spent. If you want to spend $1000-$1500 there are some fantastic optics out there; Nightforce being at the top of the list.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

I love my Leupolds but if you want the best that would be Swarovski and Zeiss.

A 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest at $399 is a hard scope to beat!

If you look around the net, you can find Zeiss Conquest scopes
3x9x40 for $399.00. That's at binoculars.com

I'll take Zeiss over Leupold any day,Leupold VX-III was my #1 choice until I tried the Conquest. I now own 2, 3-9-50mm and a 4.5-14-44mm and love them both. If your not in a hurry to get a new scope check this guy on e-bay,I bought both my scopes from him and saved a lot of money bidding on the scopes. He always has a Zeiss or two up for bid...

I would hesitate to provide an across the board recommendation to you. Almost any brand has some clunkers and most have at least a few that are a decent value for dollar.

It may also depend on what power range you are looking for. Most like having a variable scope but there are some good fixed power scopes out there.

In the most general terms:

Under $200, look at the Vortex Viper 2-7x32. It is currently on close-out since it is being discontinued (just the 2-7 scope, not the Viper line) and for the price (about $170, almost 35% off list), nothing can touch it. Vortex is a smaller company and that may put off those only looking to the big boys such as Leupold, Nikon and Bushnell, but they apparently have one of the best warrantees in the business and great CS.

If you are willing to go up to around $400, as others have said, the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 seems to be the way to go. Beyond that, you need to drop some serious cash to bump up the glass and build quality.
