Got my new Scope today BAD NEWS
Got my Brand new Nikon Monarch in the mail today. put it on leveled it up and took it out got the elevation right and started for the left and right and when it was shooting about 1 foot right i went to adjust it and it ran out of adjustment. called nikon and they jsut said oh yea that happens send it back and we will get you a new one. so i told them i'll send it back n they can give me my money back that i'm done with thier products. this spring my very good friend bought a nikon rangfinder scope and it was no good. and about a month alter he got another monarch and it was no good so i'm done with them i think i'm gettin a burris black diamond or a VX 3 what scope do you guys think is better the burris or VX 3 also considering the new vortex viper. also is a 8x32 too much power i found a 6-24 but it's got a balistic dot and i want fine plex witch is what the 8-32 is. the price is just about the same what do you think?

RE: Got my new Scope today BAD NEWS
While it is possible to get a bad scope I think there has to be more to this story. What type of bases do you have on the gun?, did you bore sight it before shooting?, are you sure that the bases are properly aligned to the bore? Before you get all upset about people asking these questions you are the one who said that you can hit at 600 + yds and then missed the shot at 300. Nikon has a very good reputation and produces a quality product.

RE: Got my new Scope today BAD NEWS
Nikon makes quality scopes. Every company will have "lemons" that slip thru quality control. I would give the Nikons another try, I think they are better value scopes than the Burris.

RE: Got my new Scope today BAD NEWS
+1 with the previous comments. Nikon makes good stuff. If not, I'd get the VX3 over a Burris. I'm not knocking Burris, I just think the Leupy is better.

RE: Got my new Scope today BAD NEWS
yea i think i'm gettin a VX 3 and the reason i am fed up with nikon is cause this is not the 1st time i think that they are goin down hill. as for my rings and bases the base was installed at cabelas and i bought Wever rings for it. i no the scope was level to cause i have the tool you put on the scope and barrel and use a straight line to make sure its' all lined up. i just think that if nikon was as good as people say then why have between me and a good friend sent back 3 now

RE: Got my new Scope today BAD NEWS
I have read some reviews of the Monarchs not holding their zero from year to year. Read some of the reviews on the cabelas web site. The people who don't have this problem with this scope say that the glass is extremely good! I have heard that Nikon makes the Glass for the VX1, VXII and VXIII. (Leupold doesn't make their own glass but puts together very well made scopes).
Leupold VXI = Nikon Prostaff (Glass only) Leupold VXII = Nikon Buckmaster (Glass only) Leupold VXIII = Nikon Monarch (Glass only) I have also heard feedback from other people that work at sporting goods stores that the Nikon customer service is much faster (and in turn better) than Leupold recently. That can mean a lot when buying a new scope. The Leupold VXIII (with Roman Numerals) were all on sale at cabelas a while back. They then came out with the Leupold VX3 (which is the same but the improved the one spring I think the one that holds the zero and they painted the outside rim of the glass black to give a little better clarity). I would give the Monarch another try (the reviews on cabelas site rave about the clarity). And with better customer service for a lower price you can't go wrong! If it doesn't work out the second time then switch. Good Luck!!! |
RE: Got my new Scope today BAD NEWS
yea i have decided to try it again they are goin to be sending me a new one soon.

Ive owned a Varix 3, and currently own a VX3, and IMO they are way over rated and overpriced, unfortunately I didnt realize this until I bought a zeiss conquest , same price, much clearer and better resolution . The leupy are very well constucted and a bit lighter than the conquest, but the glass is no better a bushnell 3200 , a sightron sI or a burris fulfeild II, all of which Ive owned and cost half what a VX3 cost. Do yourself a favor, get a zeiss conquest if you decide to not keep the nikon. Never owned a nikon.

Vortex or Sightron!!!! Great customer service and techs. I've called bother with questions and if they weren't sure or didn't have the info in front of them they tell you they will call you back and they do and even the same day. Sightron has the best warranty out there.

I've had great luck with Nikon scopes. The glass is decent for the money, easily comparable to Leupold scopes in the next higher price range, and the mechanicals have been good. Mine track well and hold zero. I think that you got your bases crooked. Just because you got it mounted at Cabela's doesn't ensure that it was mounted correctly.
I'm also going to give a +1 to the recommendation that you look at the Zeiss Conquest before you buy a Leupold. The Conquests are comparable to the VX-3 line in price, and the glass is considerably better. I put a Zeiss on my latest rifle, and it puts all my other scopes to shame in resolution, light transmision and clarity. I can't believe what I can see through the Zeiss that I can't see with any of my other scopes. The Zeiss' are a bit more than the Monarch line, and comparable to the VX-3 especially now, and they are worth every penny. I would love to eventually put a Zeiss on all my rifles. Mike |
i put a nikon buckmaster on my rem 700 and like the scope. so far no trouble. like one of the other post stated ,you might have gottin a lemon. it is fustrating when that kind of stuff happens to you. but in all honesty i'd give nikon another shot.

I have had 2 Nikon Monarch scopes. Both came on slightly used rifles I had bought. Neither was earlier than 2007 vintage. I was disappointed in the quality of the optics. I was expecting much more based upon the MSRP and hyoe in the rags ... and based too upon the optical performance I have in a top of the Nikon bino that I have. I am not saying these were not decent scopes, just not up to what I expected.
My personal choice for a scope in the price range of a Nikon Monarch is the Zeiss Conquest. I have 2 and like them both a great deal. |
I own a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14X40, Nikon Omega BDC 3-9X40, Nikon Monarch ATB 8X42, Nikon ProStaff BDC 3-9X40, and Nikon ProStaff 550 Range finder. Great products and absolutely no issues.

You need to take the time to properly mount and bore sight your scope first. Nikon puts out a good product and stands behind it with a lifetime warranty. If you don't know how to properly mount your scope or have poor scope mounts you'll never be consistent with shots.
|
agreed
Mounting a scope is where to start...
I mounted a new Bushnell Elite on a new Browning 270 wsm shortrac and could not get it to even bore sight straight .. After further inspection of the base and rings . I determend it was a bad set of rings . I went to GM and bought a new set and problem was solved ... |
|
The fact that the scope is off on the windage adjustment tells me that more than likely the mounts are off. Unless my customer wants something else; i now install Leupold or Millett turn-in rings and bases. |
Look at the Vortex line of scopes...quality if much better than NIkon and glass is WAY better as well
|
Well, you always get some decent rings and not run out of adjustment. Just saying.
Anybody that needs to pay someone to mount thier rings for them, kinda scares me a little. Its a few screws. |
Go w/ either Sightron SII or better or pony up to the Conquest Ziess!
|
I am not a fan of Weaver mounts, but if they are set correctly, and I have set at least a dozen for my buds ... then the scope should have had a ton of adjustment to get it "zeroed". I'd like to ad my thoughts on Nikon's Monarch scopes. It may just be coincidental, but I have had 2 and was not pleased with either. They were on used rifles that I had bought. One was a 50 and the other a 40 mm. Both were variable. Something like 3x9's. For the MSRP and based upon my Nikon Venturer binos (which are superb), I was expecting crisper images to the edges and far better low light performance. Everybody has their opinions, and mine is that the $600 +/- for the Monarch would be wiser spent for the Zeiss Conquest. I had no problems adjusting these Monarch's to zero and had no problem selling them as "take-offs" ... so for sure some folks like 'em.

Quite often it's not the scope but a poorly machined or mismatched set of rings. If the rings are off line even .001" you will have problems with any scope you mount.
|
We all screw up now and then, that's not what I judge a person/company on. If they do get something wrong I judge them on how far they'll go to make it right.
|
I agree at first glance doesn't sound like a scope issue but rather a mount(ing). Not a weaver fan.
|
Hmmm
I wasn't aware Nikon made their own scope glass let alone built their scopes.I thought they contracted them out to the lowest bidder according to the specs they wanted.Last I heard the monarch series scopes had a very very good quality U.S made glass installed while the lower end models get a lower quality Japanese made lenses put in.I don't know where Leupold gets their glass from but they may get it from the same manufacture just different grades or the same depending on models the glass is used for. |
