Keep the drag light, if you can find some bluewater candy rigs. They are much better quality king rigs. We make our own to insure the quality. Free lining the LY's will work, just keep in mind they arent that hardy and try to keep the fresh. Try a bluefish or a spanish on the hook as well. Blue runners are also some killer bait that you can hardly kill. Keep freelining them out or use an anchor rod. YOu should be good, they are just fast little critters and hard to catch off of a pier. Spanish like Gotcha plugs or jigging spoons reeled across the top FAST.

I personally like the jigging spoons and topwater plugs like the rapala skitterwalk for Spanish rather than the gotcha plugs. When the Spanish, Kings, and bonita are around you can have some explosive strikes on the topwater plugs, although i have never fished for them from a pier with the plugs. Good luck and remember to post some pics for us!

Topwater is the bomb, but it can be hard to work from the pier.

The red snapper fishing should be great over there at this time of year too.
