Hey bigcountry, I'm in Manassas. Can be found most eve's at the Fairfax R&G. Been meaning to get back to you on the 300 loads. The Barnes triple didn't do bad. Been playing with the OAL to tweek it alittle, but I tried the Nosler Partitions and it's drillin them with the RL25. So far, the Sierra 165 HPBT Gameking is my best. Jagged hole off the bench and FLAT out to 300, but I really wanted a 180 load.

It is, but it's open for us to bring our guest's in. Smokepole stuff huh? I was looking at mine this weekend. I posted earlier about the trouble I've been having with my Knight. Can't seem to get a respectible group. Thinkn of trying the 777 and seeing if that will work.

The point of it is options. I might buy a towing package for my truck and never use it to the full 7000lbs. But I like the option of having it there. I have a choice. And until, I find that 200gr 3200fps accurate load, I have a great backup. A load that could do anything I need it to do. I mean after all, when we passed the threshold, of 2900fps with a 180gr bullet, all the rest is pure overkill and fun.
The american way.

It was no leap, I'm just that confident with my .308. My elk I killed was a one shot kill it took 2 steps starting into a run and dropped dead, it was a good clean heart shot. Sure I would be more then happy to take your challenge would be alot of fun. Though I am 24 years old I am probably one of the best shots you ever saw I was taught by the best. My uncle an ex-Navy seal and a friend of my father who is a Ex-Green Beret. I've shot against my wifes uncle who is currently a sniper in the special forces. In a 600 meter match with federal 168 grain BTHP "match" ammo. againts his .308 and handloads I beat him with a 468-6X he shot pretty good but lost with a 453-4X.

Take a ballistics course. My 300 will shoot dang near flat out to 300 yards.
If you can ask alot of people on this forum, they will say not to get me started on ballistics because I will go on and on about ballistics. I am a walking ballistics encyclopedia. Just wanted to warn you OK.
One thing I will give you is that the 300 RUM does have considerably more energy then a .308
BUt......
That's something a .308 shooter can't say
I will assume since you say you shot for the navy, You already understand that givin under pefect shooting conditions and adverse conditions humidity level , altitude blah blah and blah you already know all that . Basically your charge doesn't detonate the same in cold weather or high altitude the same as it does at sea level under perfect conditions. But you already know that I'm sure.
Here begins my example, note that this data is data given to me by a friend in missouri who runs a private gun club. A really neat facility I might add, it is a 1,000 meter range built
underground in a cave with climate control of 65 degrees %30 humidity, 803 feet above sea level no cross wind all year long pretty much as perfect as it gets asfar as shooting conditions.
Heres two loads to compare:
.308 winchester Case: Remington Primer: fed 210 Powder: 45 grains varget bullet: 180 grain nosler partition seated at 2.790 COL, ballistic coeffient: 0.474 velocity: 2,643 fps @ 3 feet from muzzle.
Ballistics 100 200 300
_________2" -O- -9.06
.300 RUM Case: Remington Primer: fed 215m Powder: 104 grains of H870 Bullet: 200 grain Nosler partiton seated at 3.530 COL , Ballistic coeffient: 0.481 velocity: 3,018 fps @ 5 feet from muzzle, Note: @ 3 feet muzzle blast nocked over chronograph.
Ballistics 100 200 300
________1.5" -0- -7.2
Well both zeroed at 200 meters. At 100 meters theres only a .5" difference and at 300 meters only a 1.86" difference.
So if your 300 RUM shoots "dang near flat" My .308 shoots just about dang near flat
not enough difference for you to take such a leap to make the statement you did.
Something tells me asfar as your knowledge is about ballistics, It goes no further then what the salesman at walmart told you when you bought your rifle.
I'm begining to doubt that you shot for the US Navy, Otherwise you would be better versed in ballistics, I am begining to think you are some 19 year old kid that is still wet behind the ears, who is loaded with BS.

Highpower,
Well I made my point time to reflect, No disrespect meant by my comments about your lack of ballistics knowledge and that you sound like a 19 year old full BS, I just got a little erked about your reply towards me more or less pissed me off a bit. We are even now OK. No hard feelings

When it comes to ballistics I'm pretty much an expert
If you can ask alot of people on this forum, they will say not to get me started on ballistics because I will go on and on about ballistics.
My uncle an ex-Navy seal and a friend of my father who is a Ex-Green Beret. I've shot against my wifes uncle who is currently a sniper in the special forces.
I guess we'll agree to disagree. The point I was making was that 'for elk', comparing apples to apples, at 300 yds I'm punching 2500 ft lbs of energy compared to your 1768. At 400 yds, I'll be at 2150 vs your 1500 and at 500 yds, I'll still be delivering 1800 lbs vs your 1260.
You claimed we all carry 300RUM's because we're all poor shots. I say I carry a 300 RUM because I want to deliver a full power load, accurately. You see things one way, I see them another, fair enough.
