What powder for .338 Win Mag. and 225 Gr. Accubonds
 

I have a Browning A-Bolt II in .338 Winchester Magnum, with a 26 inch barrel. My current accuracy load is 71.5 grains of VV N560,with a Winchester LRM primer and a Remington case, shooting a 250 Grain SGK.

I want to try Nosler Accubond 225 Grain bullets. The powders that I have on hand are the following:

VV N160
VV N560
H4831SC
H414 (same as W760)
IMR4350

It looks like they would all be suitable. Just wondering whether you guys have any good recipes to share using one of these powders.

I have had good results with IMR 4350, IMR 4831, but the best results I have got with the 225gr Accubond have been with 72grs. of Reloader 19 powder. That is the most accurate load I have found in my rifle, I have a Remington 700BDL with a 24" barrel.

I also use IMR 4350 with 225gr. hornady Sp.

Did you ever run that load through a chronograph? If so, what kind of velocity did you get?

RE19 is the go to powder for the .338 Win Mag

72gr Imr4350 under 225gr Ab produces 2850 in my abolt. I have had absolutely no luck with RL19 in my 338 wm, IMR4350 is my goto but found positive with 4831 as well as of late.

225gr ab has been a dandy for me in the 338wm, done a bang up job on elk and moose.

If you look in the Nosler reloading manual, they show that with the 225gr. bullet, the "most accurate powder" they tested was Reloader 19. The most "accurate load" tested was with a max load of IMR 4831 at 72gr. shooting 2847fps. I have found in my rifle the most accurate load was with RL-19 shooting a half a grain under the max load of 72.5grs. I shoot 72grs. and get a little over 2800fps. out of my gun. Every gun is different, you will probably have to try different powders and loads to find out what is the optimum load for your particular gun. You have a longer barrel so a slower powder will work better for velocity, if that is what you are after. They tested these loads using a 24" barreled rifle. As far as RL-19 being temp. sensitive, it probably is but I havnt noticed it, I only use my 338 for elk in the high country when it is extremly cold. I have found the only powder that I have used that is extremly temp. sensitive is H335, I use it in my 223's. I have a winter load and a summer load because it fluctuates so much.

My most accurate loads were with IMR 4831. The 200 grain had a light load that would shoot cloverleafs all day. As I increased the charge, the group opened up until I got the load hot. It then closed right up again. I had to load heavy for the 225 grain, the 250 grain and the 275 grain Speer. I won't post my charges, as I don't want to be responsible for any mishaps. Velocity was high, recoil outragous, and terminal performance outstanding.

My T/C ProHunter .338 likes RL-19 with 225's and 250's SGK.
