Actually I did load up some 168gr match king out of my 30-06 several years ago. Shot one whitetail with them. The bullet entered just behind the shoulder and blew up inside the chest cavity. The buck didnt run but 30 yards and fell over. However, they are not made for hunting and that proves it. I use 165gr hpbt game kings now.

Sierra bullets are excellent, and I've found that most can be used interchangeably with the Nosler Partition of the same weight. You can do your load development with the Sierras and use the same weight Nosler Partition for hunting. Yes, you do need to confirm your zero when switching, but most of my loads have shownthe same POI with like-weight bullets and the same powder charge.

Don't be afraid of using 190SMK. The book says SMK's are target only but they will give you good results on game and accuracy is 2nd to none.

The Match King is not a hunting bullet, and that is why Sierra has posted that it is not to be used for hunting. If a Match King bullet hits bone (especially heavy bone), it is known to break up and not provide a clean kill.

The MatchKings are not hunting bullets because some of our military sniping ammo is loaded with them. But as you noted, they do tend to expand, sometimes too much for big game shooting....

This thread had got me thinking. I would not use matchkings for hunting. I see some do on extremeaccuracy and other long range hunting pages. But if your firing a 200-220gr piece of lead thinly coated like a mk, then I can't see why they wouldn't work. Like I said, I haven't done it and really don't plan on it. But thats a huge chunk of lead at work there.

I was gave about 250 of the 200 gr Matchkings. I was thinking loaded to about 21-2300 fps they'd have to be excellent on short range woods deer. The quickest I have ever had deer drt was using the 180 rn Winchesters out of a 742 which were probably 2400 tops.

Sierra 165gr BTHP

Used the Sierra 165 Gameking BTHP in the 308 Win and 30-06 as well as the 300 Win and 300 WSM.

Very good tough bullet ........

Yes, those BTHP's are plenty tough!
