Primers
 

I see a lot that it seems like Federal and Winchester are the two preferred primer companies by many reloaders. Are they that much better than Remington and CCI as far as accuracy?

I'm not saying CCI is a bad primer but when I first sarted handloading I had quite a few bad large pistol primers and that made me stay away, I still have several boxes in my bench that have been there for a few years. I tend to not see that much of a difference between Federal and WW primers except that the Federals seem to have softer cup metal. They're all supposed to be made to the same standard.

I have had a few bad CCI's myself. Remington has always been a good primer. Federal is a good primer, and a tad overrated for thier markup compared to the others. I have never been a winchester primer fan. They are hot, no doubt when it comes to wLRM but I always find my velocity spread to be high.

Using CCI's in my blackpowders turned me off from ever wanting to use them in a centerfire. Junk! I wonder if RWS makes centerfire primers? LOL

I have been using both CCI and Remingtons and haven't had any problems yet with either but have only loaded a few hundred rounds so I personally don't have a lot of experiance with either to go on. Think I may stay with Remingtons of try Federals whenever I can find some Federals.

Even with the same reloading manually, you'll see different manufacturers primers recommended for different calibers. Some primers have characteristics that match up better with magnum heavy load calibers, such as, .44 mag.
I try to stick with what the reloading manual recommends for a given caliber and load.
Winchester primers have at times been harder for me to come across in quantity. I use them for .357 mag reloading and large/magnum rifle loads, when called for.
I use Rem 2 1/2 in .44 mag for my Redhawk, because for this revolver, my experience they provide most consistent firing, where I had some issues with that using WLP primers for that caliber in that revolver.

My ddad has used exclusively CCI for years and been happy. I use mostly Winchester and I will be using CCI's in my AR when I run out of the Winchester silver cup's.

I have never had a round not go off out of thousands and thousands of rounds. I use Federal Primers. Good luck.

I use mostly Federal in large rifle and large rifle magnum with no problems. I also have used plenty of CCI without problems.

I've only used Winchester 209s in my inline. So far, so good......
