just got myself a remington 7600 in 35 Whelen, does anybody have any experience with this caliber? have a load book for it, just wondering how rare a caliber this is. from what i have seen from balistic tests this is a 200 yard or less round. like some opinions on it.

I have a 760 in 35 whelen. great gun. what do you want to hit more than 200 yards away? It will do more than that but you better be intimate with the bullet drop.

Just an 06 necked up to 35. Popularity has increased reciently, but still not real easy to find ammo for. The Whelen isn't limited to 200yds, but inside 200 is where it really shines. It's a thumper and has worked real well for my bud on many bear and elk.

yes, i am aware of the difficulty getting shells for it. i also purchased a set of rcbs dies in 35 whelen, and was wondering if anybody had any pet loads they would be willing to share.

The 200grainer with BL-C(2) is my buds favorite load in his M700.

Thes loads are safe in my bud's guns but you'll need to work up in your own rigs so start a few grains lower for each of these.

I wouldn't go above these loads in your pump gun as 7600's aren't usually as stout as a bolt.

I have taken several whitetails with the 200 Hornady over 55.5 grains of 3031, including one at a hair less than 300 yards. The Whelen's effectivieness on game has been consistenetly excellent, well beyond what the paper statistics might suggest.
A great asset of the caliber is due to the modest velocity, there is no need for premium bullets. I now have taken 2 moose with plain old 250 grain Hornadys over 4064 .
RL15 and Varget are also great powders in the Whelen, and I would be inclined to start with them. Neither was available when I started loading for the Whelen. Check Alliant's and Hodgden's wesites for load data.
I think you bought a fine rifle in a great hunting caliber. The 7600 is tougher than many people might think. I doubt that either will ever disappoint you. Good luck.

The 35 Whelen is agreat round. If you handload. It's even better.
What with all the 06 cases floating around. And you handloading. There would not be a shortage of ammo.
What's interesting is that too this day there is still a lot of data on it.
Excellent cartridge.
Kind of a poor man's 375 H@H.

i also have a 7600 whelen and a 750. both carbines. (i had the 7600 chopped) shoots like a gem. i dont really shoot handloads through it because its set up w/ a williams peepsight and factory ammo is more accurate then i can shoot w/ a peep sight. i do have some loads for barnes, sierra and hornady if you'd like them. ive killed deer w/ rem 200's and 250's and fed 225 TBBC and i get the smae results on deer. they all are dead in their tracks. same w/ the 350 mag which is ballistically identical really to the whelen. everyone else has pretty m8uch covered the range of the whelen so i wont bother repeating it. all my shots are well w/ in 100 yards here in northern maine and ill tell ya it works awesome for tracking big bucks! ive shot deer runnning away w/ the 250gr rem psp and had full penitration from the hind quarter steaks all the way up the body and stopped just inside the hide in the brisket. pretty impressive for a so so bullet ide say! and that was a 232lb white tail!

4patches, I purchased 2,200 cases,1,400 for .01 cents each and 800 for .03 cents each, after allowing the dirt dobbers to hatch in the 1.400 and removing the links on the 800, I took 200 of the cases and sized them to 35 Whelen, I was told the brass, all military made after 1941 andbefore 1958, was tooold and brittle because of use and age, none split, the 35 Whelen case and dies are my second favorite, the 280 Remington case is my all time favorite, there is one problem that is created when sizing a 30/06 case to 35 Whelen, the case is compressed when the neck is expandedas much as .035 thousands, this means theneck of the case allows a gap between the mouth of the case and throat of the chamber, (the gap can be as much as .045) the same gap exist when using 30/06 cases to form 270 Winchester cases, some expander balls require less effort, I have used graphite, mica and lube, in my opinion the mica is the least effective (waste of money), cleaning the neck with a lubed wire brush is most effective and reduce resistance to sizing.[/align][/align]Measure case length before and after sizing.
