.243 and 6mm

Can a 243 be rechambered for a 6mm Remington case? I have seen on some other forums where guys have done it, just not sure if they are not worried about the .025 difference at the shoulder, or the longer case takes care of this. Any of you guys know if this will work?

Probably, but why? If you want the extra speed just punch it out to a .243 AI...

How common is 243 AI? Can I by brass for it or will I have to form my own? 6mm brass is more common right?

You just buy regular .243 Win brass/ammo, fire-form it, then reload as usual. I'm not sure how common 6mm brass is, but Lapua makes .243 brass...

Thanks jeep! You had me dig some more and the AI actually has a larger capacity then a 6mm, 4%. I also read about the fire forming and that seems pretty simple. With how common 243 brass is it would make more sense to go that route. Any ideas on what it would cost to have this cut by a gun smith?

I'm not sure how much it'd be...but probably around $100 or so, some of the smiths on here will chime in.

+1. Good idea Jeep. I do not have much use for a 243, but you still have a good idea. This would allow you to use the same brass, And if you are neck siziing, you should be able to use the same dies??? Tom.

No, you would need to buy .243 AI dies. I have Reddings and they were $90. They're not cheap..

Not for the sake of arguing. Well OK for the sake of arguing.:D:D:D If you are only sizing the neck, and not touching or bumping the shoulder-why would you need new dies??? You can neck size with FL dies if you do it correctly. But then I always take the expander ball out of the dies and use a Sinclair sizing mandrel.

I thought the AI rechambering mostly affected the body taper, and shoulder??? How would it affect the neck??? Tom.

I've never thought about it like that...

Maybe RR will chime in, he'll probably know.
