ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner head cause you would sooner or later hafta bump the shoulder, it would cause excessive headspace, and you would put the body taper back in the case then straighten it out with each firing which would seriously overwork the brass causing short case life which is the main advantage of going AI. RR RR you are probably right on this one. I guess my point was very few people shoot their rifles enough to have to bump the shoulder's. IMO it takes 3 or 4 loadings before the shoulder would need bumped. And I believe very few people shoot that much. When I buy a new rifle I normally buy400-500 pieces of brass. I normally sort out about 1/2 of them. So with four loadingsthat is 1,000 shots before I would need to bump the shoulder. Very few people shoot their rifle1,000 times. And I guess I am a little cheap. And I will also admit that I have never reloaded for an Ackley. Tom. |

I don't have any drawings before me but I suspect by the time you adjusted a set of .243 dies down low enough to do much neck sizing, you would also be resizing part of the body of the case and reshaping the taper. Any bottle necked cartridge it's best to have the EXACT dies for the cartridge. JMHO If I went to the trouble to rechamber a rifle, I'd spring for the correct dies as well.

I never really thought about that. But as I stated I have never reloadedany Ackley's. They say the P.O. Ackley bok is a good read. I guess I am going to have to find out??? I have had my eye on a 22-250AI. I would like to try to drive the 75 grain A-Max at 3300 or try for 3400 fps. The problem is I heard the bullet will not stand up to this velocity in a 1in8 twist??? Well thanks guys for all your insight to this. I am pretty sure I want my next gun to be a 243 AI. Funny how these forums expose you to all this stuff. A couple of days ago I never even heard of much AI works before. I have a .204 that I am pretty happy with. Not sure if I will ever need to stop in the .22 cal arena or just go to the .24 park and play.
RR, a 22-6mmAI is a .22 in a 6mmAI necked down case? What speeds does it do for lighter bullets? or is it to much for a small bullet? |

ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner yep, and he's close by, montour county rifles of pa. now to find a way to fund it, just ordered a new 8.5x25 loopy mark 4 today, am ordering a 223 bolt face lh mauser action next week, then I'll look for a 30/06 LH action for the 22/6mm AI. you right handed guys don't know how good ya got it! If you have access to a lath you can rent the reamer and do it yourself...I have rented from whiterock in Missiouri a few times....Good luck....Don't forget to set up the spider attatchment as well...If the barrel isn't too long you can get by without the spider...

Just watch at the gun shows for a set of dies. I just picked up a set of rcbs 243AI dies for $15.Now all i need is a rifle to ream out. The perfect excuse to buy a gun lol.
