Could someone tell me what the advantage would be (if there is one) using one or the other of these two bullet designs if your shots are 300yds and less. Also is one more accurate than the other at any given range. Thank You!

due to the drag coef., the flat base will penetrate better than a boattail, so they say. If my shots were under 300 yards, I would just shoot what is the most accurate out of my gun. Which I bet will NOT BE the boattail. If your crown is not perfect, boattails will have a harder time flying out or may kick to one side or another when coming out of the muzzle compare to a flat base.

You will not notice any difference between the two at under 300 yards. I once read a test on BT, FB, and RN bullets using a 30-06 and until you got out to 350+ yards there was no noticable difference between them. Accuracy will depend more on your rifle than the ammo.

Actually at closer ranges there is no real difference.At longer ranges the boattails are not affected as much by wind or air resistance.Flat bases do not always penetrate more as this is more a function of bullet construction than shape.The barnes x boattail is one of the best penetrators on the market and it is a boattail.As for accuracy there is no real difference as 1000 yard shooters use boattails and they do not lose accuracy but there bullets drop less and are less affected by wind than flat bases.The nosler ballistic tip is one of the most accurate bullets on the market in most guns and it is also a boattail bullet.

Stubblejumper, I guess they will start making big bore bullets boattails then. What I was trying to explain was as a general rule. Everyone knows there is exceptions to every rule. Besides barnes suck<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Big country -Big bores will probably never be boattails because they are almost always used at close ranges where the boattails have no advantage.I have also used the jensen j26 for grizzly hunting with my 8mm rem mag.They also penetrate as well as partitions even though they are a boattail.The drag coef. argument is not really a great argument either as since boatails cut through the air better due to less drag why would they not cut through other medias better again due to less drag?

Oh yea, how do you know they penetrate as well. Oh let me guess, the company told you so. What I am trying to get at here, is there is no reason in my opinion for all the exactness that goes on here on these pages. It extreamely annoying. I guess I should quit trying to post and let you answer everyones questions.

I always thought that flat base bullets were inheriently more accurate than boat tails of the same design because there is more weight to the rear. Alot of bench rest bullets are flat base with hollow point design for that reason, to keep weight at the rear of the bullet.
