Default does any load .30-30 style bullets....

..in larger capacity cases? Example - a 150gr flatnose bullet in a .30-06? In most .30-30s you have to use flat and round nose bullets but people would love to use spitzers, but does anyone prefer the flatnose for quick expansion and enery transfer? I wonder what the result would be with a 150gr flatnose from a .300 WBY Mag if it hit a whitetail in the ribs at close range. I guess a bad angle shot might result in the bullet fragmenting but it would pack a whallop at the beginning of the wound channel.

I can't answer for sure what you are asking but I will relate a story of mine and you can decide.
I shoot a 45-70 a lot. With Remington bullets every time I shot a deer the bullet would fragment. Remington said it was because I was loading my own ammo and the bullet was not designed for 1900 FPS. I think it is a crock of bull but I change bullets and haven't had any more problems.
With a .45 caliber bullet you don't need expansion.
Any good bullet should expand and do the job without suffering the lack of speed from a round nose bullet in a weatherby.

Heck yeah I use them! I've posted a few times about using flats in higher velocity cartridges. Spitzers didn't have the quick expansion and shock I've been looking for in a bullet. That flat bullet is what makes the little 30-30 so effective. You want to see impressive results on deer? Load that 150gr flat into a 30-06 at nearly 2800fps. My buddy wishes flat bullets were available for his .270 Win. The furthest I've tracked a deer hit with a flat is 30 yards after a frontal lung shot. My preference in bullet brand is the Speer Hot-Cor 150gr .308 #2011 flat nose. The lead core is soldered to the copper jacket to resist fragmenting at those higher speeds, and the price was right too, at $12.50 per 100.

762 Brother!,
Do we see eye to eye or what? I'm planning on putting some 170 grain Speer Hot- Cors in my 308 this year and have been using 150 gr. pointed Hot-Cor's in my single shot 30-30 and 308 lever for a few years now. I just want a new experience so I'm going to try the 170's. I just can't wait!
I can get 2800 fps with the 150's in my 308. The 30-06 should be able to get about 100 fps more.
I've read elsewhere of guys using FP's in 308 and they are nothing less than ecstatic about the results!
The effect I would assume is Ballistic Tip behavior at somewhat less velocities because they are designed for slower bullets.

Barnes,
I would think you're really a bit too fast with your Weatherby maybe try Speer's 180 grain round nosed to prevent blo-up. Just an idea. And the 170's in the 30-06.

Well, I'm not really planning on replacing my beloved X bullets when it comes to hunting with my Weatherby but I was very curious. I think I'll buy some for the target range and see how they behave out of the rifle. I think I could get 3400-3500 fps out of a 150 grain bullet. That would be cooking for a soft, lead flat point. It might be great for busting water jugs!!!
