3006 reloads for coyotes
 

anybody reloading 3006s for coyotes.....less than 100gr....is it possible.....im new to this..........thanks..........

I've never loaded my '06 specifically for coyotes, have loaded plenty for groundhogs with 110 and 130 gr. bullets and have seen an accuracy edge with the 130s. It wouldn't be my recommendation to use either if you're looking to get nice pelts, very messy results with these lighter bullets. I don't know if they are still available, nor did they group that well out of my rifle, but the 55gr. accelerator would be perfect(55gr. sp@4000fps=lots of quick expansion without huge exit hole) If looking just to kill 'em, I'd go with 130 hp

About the only way you could get this to work is use a Barnes X bullet. A lighter one will shoot flatter. I think they make a 130 gr. Triple Shock. These bullets will generally zip right through a coyote and leave a finger size exit hole - unless, of course, you hit big bone like the spine or shoulder. I shot a coyote last year coming into the call. At 40 yards, my 6MM-284 put a Barnes X bullet through him end for end. It made a 1/2" exit hole in the hip and stilll had enough steam to go through a 6" Pinon tree.

If I were to load my .30-06 for coyotes and intend to save the pelts, the bullet would be something in the 147-155 grain full metal jacket range. No expansion, just in and out, with no bigger of a hole than it went in with.

BTW- I don't load the .30-06 for coyotes because I have my .223 so it would be pointless in my situation, IMO.

im a big fan of all the 30cal. I like to use the 125gr nosler ballistic tips because they do the job and they dont exit. im shooting the same bullet out of my 300 weatherby. the 30-06 load i have is 125gr bullet with imr4320 (53.5gr). they average 3173fps.

They don't exit?? I can barely keep a 70 gr. Ballistic Tip (.243) from exiting a large coyote.

you have to remember that the bullets are constructed very simalrily, and the 300 wthby is pushing them along a good bit faster.

I don't see how it's possible. How could an allegedly "adequate" big game bullet not even exit a coyote? Can't have it both ways.

ihave shot a few coyotes with my 300 Win Mag. The 125 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter bullets that i sometimes use will not exit a coyote shotstraight on from the front or rear.

No personal experience here but I do *plan* on a 30-06 and since I have to cross state lines to use it on anything bigger than a coyote I also have *planned* on using it for this. Check out Sierra's page.

They have a blunt 110gr FMJ a 110gr HP Varminter and a 110gr RN Pro-hunter. If you don't want an exit at all I'd try the Varminter...its length is more compareable to the 'normal' 30 cal bullets eights. If you want a guarentee that you won't have a large exit wound I'd try the FMJ. Hey, who am I kinding? I'd buy a box of each work up some loads, see which was more accurate out of my gun and then shoot 3 yotes with each. (Regrettable, no more than I hunt for them that's about 2 seasons worth!!![&:])
