Default Need to dispose of some old live ammo.

Guys, I've got some old liverifle and pistolcartridges that I need to
dispose of. These belonged to my father who passed away in 1975.
We no longer have the correct caliber guns to fire these rounds.
And Iwas hoping some of you could advise meon a safe and proper
way to dispose of it.

Thanks

Age does not make the ammo bad. Unless the ammo is corroding It should be good to use.

If I understand right, you can't just shoot 'em off because the guns are gone? Maybe take 'em to a local shop if they were factory ammunition and see if they'll give 'em away? Or if you reload buy a $20 bullet puller and disassemble the ammunition. It may come in handy later on anyways. Or lastly, if you own a pond dump 'em off there...not the best idea I'm sure, but effective.[&:]

I remember my dad soaking some old corroded ammo in bucket of water for about a week then tossed them in the trash. dont know if that was long enough for water to seap into the cartridges or if any water seaped in at all who knows.

Give them to someone at a gun show. I have destroyed all types of ammunition in my 40 year career in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD); 20+ years in the US Army, and 20 years as a civilian. Will soon post an article on this board concerningproper storage of small arms and components in the home, destruction of unwanted small arms ammo, etc. i have destroyed about one half billion rounds of small arms ammo by burning. Destroyed all the unserviceable ammunition, some 15,000 tons worth, from Operation Desert Storm, including about150 million rounds of small arms ammo.

This is me in a burn pit with aboutten million rounds of small arms ammunition.

If you don't want it around and it's factory ammo, give it to someone who can use it. Second choise, drop it off at a police station and they will get rid of it for you.
